After Bethesda revealed that the physical Switch 2 version of Skyrim: Anniversary Edition would only contain a code to download the game, fans immediately expressed their disappointment. The most popular comment pointed out that Bethesda seemed to miss the point of physical copies: gamers don’t want to worry about servers staying online or digital clutter, they want a lasting, preserved copy on a cartridge or disc. Many gamers feel that a digital-only release isn’t enough; they want a physical copy. This is especially true now, as online game servers can be shut down unexpectedly, cutting off access to games that require an internet connection. While there’s no current indication that Skyrim won’t remain available on the next Nintendo Switch, the possibility of that happening someday worries many players, particularly for a game that can be played entirely on your own. Groups like Stop Killing Games are working to preserve games, and the same idea – that we should be able to access games in the future – applies to single-player titles as well.
The game Skyrim unexpectedly appeared on the Nintendo Switch 2 in December 2025, offered as a free download to players who already had it on the original Switch. At first, it was only available digitally, but Bethesda has recently announced a physical copy that includes a download code.

Despite continually re-releasing Skyrim, Bethesda is still developing The Elder Scrolls 6, first announced in 2018. Bethesda has since admitted announcing the game so early was a mistake, and updates have been scarce over the past eight years.
