Skyrim Shadow Dropped on the Nintendo Switch 2

There’s a running gag that Todd Howard, the head of Bethesda, loves to release new versions of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim on every possible platform, and that’s happened again! Originally launched in 2011 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, Skyrim has seen several re-releases, including Premium and Legendary Editions. It was then upgraded and re-released as the Special Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016.

Over the years, Bethesda has continued to support Skyrim, releasing it on new platforms like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and even in virtual reality and through Amazon Alexa. A highly-rated version was also made for the Nintendo Switch, offering exclusive content and compatibility with amiibo figures. Now, players with the new Nintendo Switch 2 can enjoy a dedicated version of the game on Nintendo’s latest console/handheld hybrid.

Skyrim Has Been Shadow Dropped on Switch 2

Bethesda unexpectedly released Skyrim on the new Nintendo Switch 2! This version of the beloved game looks better, loads faster, and runs more smoothly than it did on the original Switch. It’s the Anniversary Edition, including all Creation Club content and the Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire expansions. Current Switch owners can upgrade to this new version for free, while new players can purchase it for $59.99.

Skyrim on Switch 2 Has the Nintendo Exclusive Items Intact

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Skyrim includes special content originally found only in the first Switch version. Players can get items from The Legend of Zelda series, like the Master Sword and Hylian Shield, and the Champion’s Tunic, which gives their character a look inspired by Breath of the Wild. You can unlock these items by using Zelda: Breath of the Wild amiibo figures, or by discovering a hidden chest on Throat of the World, a mountain you’ll reach naturally as you play the main story.

Bethesda is All-In on Shadow Drops

Bethesda surprised gamers with more than just Skyrim in 2025. They also unexpectedly released The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered earlier this year on several platforms. This gave fans a chance to play the beloved RPG again with better performance and much-improved visuals. While a version for the Switch 2 hasn’t been revealed, it’s possible that could also be a surprise release in the future.

Some people think Elder Scrolls 6 might be released suddenly without any prior announcement, but that’s probably unlikely. A game as huge as Elder Scrolls 6 would likely benefit more from a proper marketing push. Luckily, the game is still several years away, so fans don’t need to worry about that just yet. In the meantime, Elder Scrolls fans can revisit Skyrim on the Switch 2 and speculate about where Elder Scrolls 6 will eventually be available.
