Bethesda has released an update for Skyrim on the Switch, but many players are still disappointed with its performance, specifically the low framerate. Although the game has been popular for 15 years and re-released multiple times, some fans feel the latest version doesn’t run well enough on modern hardware, lessening the excitement of having it on another platform. Many believe a game this old should perform better.
At the beginning of December, Skyrim was unexpectedly released on the Switch 2, giving Nintendo’s latest console its own version of the popular game, just like the original Switch. However, players quickly noticed the new version didn’t run as smoothly as the older Switch edition, even though the Switch 2 is more powerful. Bethesda responded quickly to the feedback, but it seems their recent update doesn’t fix one of the biggest problems with the game’s performance on the new console.
Bethesda Patches Skyrim’s Input Lag on Switch 2, but Framerates are Still Low
Following the release of the much-discussed Switch 2 version of Skyrim, Bethesda released a patch on December 19th to address the biggest complaint: significant lag. Many players reported the game was nearly unplayable due to delays of up to a full second between their actions and what happened on screen. While users on social media now say the patch has improved performance, many still note that the game struggles to consistently reach a smooth 30 frames per second. Since the initial release was already criticized for its 30FPS limit, some fans are disappointed the game hasn’t been optimized further.
After the recent update, some players are reporting better performance, with higher framerates. However, these improvements aren’t happening for everyone. Many are seeing around 40 frames per second in Skyrim, which is an improvement over the 30 FPS others are still getting, but still not as high as they’d like. Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077, a much newer and more demanding game, runs between 30 and 40 FPS on the same console. Some players are frustrated that a game as old as Skyrim is only slightly outperforming such a large, modern title like Cyberpunk.
While some people reacted positively to the update and the new Switch port, it’s still a debated topic. Many fans are also frustrated that the Switch 2 version costs $59.99, compared to the $49.99 price for the Anniversary Edition of Skyrim on Steam – especially since the PC version likely runs much smoother for $10 less. However, existing Switch owners can upgrade for free, which softens the blow of the price, as performance issues are the biggest concern for most players.
Image via Betheda Bethesda might release an update to improve the performance of Skyrim on the Switch 2, but they haven’t announced any plans to do so yet. As for The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda says development is going smoothly, and fans can hopefully expect more information soon. After being announced over seven years ago, many hope the next Elder Scrolls game will be better received than this recent Skyrim port, but only time will tell.
