Picture this: John Wick finds himself transported into the gritty, futuristic landscape of Cyberpunk 2077. Equipped with extraordinary firepower, he must face ruthless adversaries amidst a world that serves as a chilling foreshadowing of potential future realities, where humanity’s darker instincts run rampant.
This game is primarily known as SlavicPunk: Oldtimer. It’s a dystopian, isometric shooter where you take on the role of Yanus, a seasoned private investigator who enjoys fighting and has an arsenal of witty remarks at his disposal. Armed with a versatile collection of modifiable weapons, you’ll leverage Yanus’ exceptional combat skills to traverse a world that’s been described as a uniquely Slavic interpretation of the cyberpunk genre.
The game titled “SlavicPunk: Oldtimer,” hailing from Red Square Games, is now making its way onto Xbox and PlayStation platforms after being available on PC for over a year. This timing is what inspired the review entitled “SlavicPunk: Oldtimer.
Looks Great, Feels Better
I managed to secure a pre-release version of SlavicPunk for PlayStation 5, which isn’t typically my preferred gaming perspective. Yet, my curiosity was piqued, leading me to jump right in. Within just an hour of playing, I found myself captivated and won over by the game’s unique art style and isometric viewpoint, developing a fondness for it.
Similar to many dystopian stories, SlavicPunk immerses you in a dismal, poverty-stricken environment that may leave you feeling quite gloomy. However, this melancholy is swiftly replaced by intense excitement when you find yourself in the heat of a fierce gun battle with adversaries closing in from every direction.
This game transforms into a timeless twin-stick shooter, and your gaze darts around the screen as you employ every weapon, movement technique, and power-up to survive. It’s tough, even on the easiest setting, it’s merciless, and it’s incredibly enjoyable.
Everything, including the liberty to endanger all lives, and the intense, synthetic cyberpunk soundtrack (that can be purchased separately on certain platforms), managed to keep me engaged.
Action-Packed Adventure
SlavicPunk: The Oldtimer’s narrative is deeply enveloping, and its heart conceals an intriguing tale. Despite some questionable voice acting (Yanus being a notable exception amidst a group of less experienced actors), the plot developments keep you on the edge of your seat, pondering what could happen next.
The game offers a primarily straight-forward structure, but there are larger sections to delve into for a richer experience. Feel free to approach conflicts according to your playstyle; whether you prefer a head-on assault or a sneakier approach with stealth, both options are valid. Enjoy the versatility this title provides!
In this cyberpunk game, you’ll find several tech-oriented interactions. You have the ability to momentarily slow down time and employ a ‘battlehacking’ technique to sabotage opponents during combat. This feature proves crucial in certain situations, adding an exciting element of pause to intense battles.
Despite being relatively short in duration, it’s jam-packed with content. Moreover, it’s unique as battles seldom followed the same pattern twice. It’s also notable for its high replay value. Additionally, I found myself eager to play it on various difficulty levels, intrigued by how the complexity of the challenge would escalate.
Spoiler alert: It gets pretty damn tough.
As the story of this game unfolded, I found myself eagerly awaiting any potential expansions or sequels from Red Square in the future. I’m excited to delve deeper into the world they’ve created and the initial installment seems affordable enough for me to jump right in.
Verdict: Buy
Oldtimer is a straightforward isometric shooter game with complex combat situations. While it might not excel in voice acting and is relatively short, it delivers an engaging cyberpunk-themed adventure that’s great for beginners as an introduction to a broader cyberpunk universe.
