A director has been chosen for the live-action movie based on the video game Sleeping Dogs. Simu Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi, will play the main character, Wei Shen, and the script is finished.
Sleeping Dogs, originally launched in 2012, has gained a dedicated following over time. The game puts you in the role of a police officer working undercover in Hong Kong, letting you navigate the city using parkour and martial arts. Although critics generally liked the game, it didn’t sell well, which unfortunately meant there were no sequels.
The story is now being adapted for the big screen, with Simu Liu, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Shang-Chi,’ playing the main character, Wei Shen. A completed script existed, but the project’s future was uncertain. Now, a promising action film director is set to bring this long-awaited adaptation to life.

Simu Liu announced on Twitter that Timo Tjahjanto will direct the upcoming Sleeping Dogs adaptation. Tjahjanto is an Indonesian director who’s gaining recognition with larger projects, including his recent film Nobody 2, a sequel to the 2021 action movie. He’s also set to direct the next installment in The Beekeeper franchise starring Jason Statham, and is potentially involved with a Hollywood sequel to Train to Busan.
Timo Tjahjanto has long supported making a movie based on the game Sleeping Dogs. He responded to Simu Liu’s frustration about the project stalling by explaining that the main issue was a lack of support from studio executives. When asked if he’d direct the film, he playfully responded with a smiling GIF – a response that now seems particularly relevant given recent developments.
Currently, a studio and release date for the film haven’t been secured. However, with a director, writer, completed script, and a Marvel actor involved, news about those details could arrive soon. The project, based on the video game ‘Sleeping Dogs’, has faced challenges in Hollywood for years, with earlier attempts falling through. Donnie Yen, known for his roles in ‘Rogue One’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, was previously set to star as Wei Shen, but that didn’t materialize. Hopefully, the film will finally be made and ‘Sleeping Dogs’ will receive the recognition it deserves.
