Sleeping Dogs Movie Gets a Positive Update from Simu Liu

Simu Liu, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently shared encouraging news about the planned movie adaptation of *Sleeping Dogs*. He’s been working on getting the film made since announcing his plans in January 2025, and his latest update has excited fans who are eager to see it happen.

Originally launched in 2012 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, Sleeping Dogs is an open-world action game where players take on the role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop battling the Triads in Hong Kong. Although fans have long requested a sequel, Square Enix canceled plans for another game. When producer Dan Liu mentioned wanting to make a movie based on the game, fans became excited about the possibility of a big-screen adaptation.

Simu Liu Teases Sleeping Dogs Script Draft

On October 18th, Simu Liu announced on Twitter that the first draft of the *Sleeping Dogs* movie script is finished. Fans were thrilled and shared their favorite moments from the game online, including animated clips of popular scenes and fights. When asked about working with Square Enix, Liu said they’ve been very supportive. He explained that the biggest challenge has been convincing movie studios how valuable the *Sleeping Dogs* franchise is, but he’s optimistic about the project’s progress.

When Liu first mentioned a *Sleeping Dogs* movie, it sounded like the project was just beginning, with the rights to the game still being negotiated. However, it appears development may have already been underway when Liu made his announcement. According to reports, Story Kitchen is heading up the film, and Liu is expected to star as Wei Shen.

So, a *Sleeping Dogs* movie has been in the works for a while now, actually! Back in 2017, Donnie Yen – you know, the action star – announced he was going to make a film based on the game, and he was even planning to play Wei Shen himself. Sadly, he shared earlier this year, in January 2025, that the project was officially off the table. But just a few weeks later, it was amazing news to hear that Liu is now trying to get the movie made! It’s great the game might finally get the big-screen treatment.

Adapting video games into movies and TV shows is becoming increasingly common. Recent examples include the popular series *The Last of Us*, with *Fallout* Season 2 announced at Gamescom in August. Films like *Super Mario Bros.* and *Minecraft* have also proven successful with audiences of all ages. While the game *Sleeping Dogs* might be less well-known, especially to those new to gaming, having Liu involved could revitalize this beloved classic.
