The recently broadcasted Nintendo Direct provided a more detailed glimpse into what is presumably the Nintendo Switch 2, solidifying that Nintendo intends to capitalize on the incredible success of the initial Switch. Although there has been some debate over the price, accessories, and certain forthcoming games for the Nintendo Switch 2, the unveiling of numerous intriguing and unexpected first- and third-party titles during the Direct generated significant interest in Nintendo’s upcoming platform.
Towards the finale of the show, it was quite unexpected that they announced the return of a series – Kirby Air Riders, which is a sequel to the 2003’s game, Kirby Air Ride. This new racing game can be seen as an exciting continuation for one of Nintendo GameCube’s less celebrated titles. Although it’s thrilling to see this game get a worthy successor, the emergence of Kirby Air Riders could potentially signal some challenging times ahead for one of Nintendo’s iconic series: Super Smash Bros.
Kirby Air Riders Brings Back A Familiar Face
Masahiro Sakurai Returns To Kirby For The First Time Since 2003
The concluding scene of the preview for Kirby Air Riders confirmed that the game is being helmed by none other than Masahiro Sakurai. Although Sakurai gained renown in the gaming industry primarily as the architect of Super Smash Bros., he first made a name for himself as the originator of the Kirby series. Prior to 2003, he collaborated with Nintendo on that franchise before establishing his own independent company, Sora Ltd., alongside his wife, Michiko.
It’s noteworthy that after some time away, Masahiro Sakurai is once again focusing on the Kirby series with the game Kirby Air Ride. This project seems to be a joint effort between Sora and HAL Laboratory, marking Sakurai’s first time as director of a Kirby game since he helmed its predecessor, Kirby Air Ride. It appears that HAL Laboratory wanted Sakurai back in charge and had faith in his vision to create a sequel to the beloved GameCube installment.
Sakurai’s Work On Kirby Air Riders May Hold Back Smash Bros.
Fans of the Super Smash Bros series might find the news that Sakurai is working on Kirby Air Riders somewhat disappointing, as they’ve come to anticipate a new installment in the series when a new Nintendo platform emerges. Given the incredible success of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which holds the title of the best-selling fighting game ever made, it’s not unreasonable to assume that another Smash Bros game will eventually be released during the lifetime of the Switch 2.
It’s possible that Nintendo might find it challenging to develop another “Smash Bros” game without Sakurai’s leadership, as he may be occupied with both a new project and “Kirby Air Riders”. The lofty expectations established by the expansive nature of “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” make this a particularly difficult task for the future of the series.
Super Smash Bros. Should Still Arrive On Switch 2 At Some Point
Though Smash Bros. enthusiasts might need to be patient for updates on the next installment, it’s almost certain that the series will carry on with the Switch 2 at a later time. Given the unparalleled fame and prestige of Super Smash Bros., Nintendo appears unwilling to abandon the franchise on its new platform. In fact, if no other reason, the emergence of Nintendo Switch 2 versions for previously launched games hints that Ultimate could receive an upgrade for the Switch 2, and potentially introduce some fresh characters as well.
It might take a while before Super Smash Bros. officially debuts on the Nintendo Switch 2, given that Masahiro Sakurai is currently working on Kirby Air Rider. However, we don’t have to wait for too long as the franchise won’t be gone for good, and when Super Smash Bros. is ready for the Switch 2, Nintendo will undoubtedly create a buzz. In the interim, let’s keep our fingers crossed that Sakurai’s work on Kirby Air Rider revitalizes the beloved racer series with a strong comeback.
