Sniper Elite Fans, You Won’t Believe What Atomfall Has in Store!

Since 2020, Rebellion Developments has launched games such as Zombie Army 4: Dead War, Evil Genius 2: World Domination, Sniper Elite VR, Sniper Elite 5, Zombie Army VR, and Sniper Elite: Resistance. Among these releases, Rebellion has also started working on Atomfall, an upcoming action-survival game that they’ve been developing alongside their other titles. In essence, Rebellion is almost synonymous with the Sniper Elite series, so fans of Sniper Elite may want to give Atomfall a look beyond just its shared developer.

In a nutshell, “Sniper Elite” is a series of tactical shooting games, while “Atomfall” is an action-survival game set in an alternate timeline following the Windscale Incident. At first glance, they may not appear to have much in common. However, a recent conversation with Ben Fisher, the head of design at Rebellion, sheds light on how lessons learned from “Sniper Elite” were incorporated into “Atomfall”. Upon closer inspection, these two games share more than meets the eye.

Sniper Elite, Atomfall, and Player Agency, Oh My

Resistance and Atomfall employ the same photogrammetry techniques for their game assets. According to Fisher, this technique increases the sense of immersion within the game world and its stunning environments.

However, what sets Atomfall apart is how it expands upon the open-ended approach introduced in Sniper Elite.

Fisher clarified that the game Sniper Elite sets the standard for sandbox gaming at Rebellion. The team provides players expansive, open maps to explore, flexibility in tackling missions, and the ability for each player to play in their preferred style. This aspect is a distinctive feature of every Sniper Elite title, with Fisher noting that Atomfall extends these teachings even more: it builds upon the lessons learned from previous games.

In Atomfall, we’ve amplified previous lessons by expanding the sandbox and granting players greater control over their gameplay experience. This means they have the option to finish the entire story without engaging in a single fight, or they can opt for total destruction! Empowering player choice and autonomy is crucial to us.

A common complaint about many game designs today is that they are overly directive or don’t offer enough room for players to discover things independently. However, Atomfall is different; it emphasizes player agency and reflects Rebellion granting its players as much liberty as they desire. Although there’s an option for a more structured experience for those who prefer it, Atomfall aims to be a standout example of player freedom. Furthermore, players will have the opportunity to verify this for themselves through Xbox Game Pass.
