Solo Leveling, a popular anime series, has been generating quite a buzz lately. The second season concluded just last month, leaving enthusiasts anxiously anticipating the next installment. Although the show has achieved significant success, there’s a segment of its fanbase that expresses dissatisfaction with certain alterations introduced in the anime adaptation.
Solo Leveling is a rendition of its highly acclaimed manhwa series that gained immense popularity before the anime’s debut. Following its premiere, the anime has introduced slight adjustments; however, towards the closing stages of Season 2, these alterations seemed unacceptable to certain viewers.
The Solo Leveling Anime Changes
Jin-Woo is Molded Into a Typical Hero
Fans have consistently expressed concerns about the main character, Sung Jin-Woo, as there are frequent minor alterations in his character. However, his fundamental traits such as strength, actions, and motivations remain consistent. Following his battle with Kang Tae-Shik, it was discovered that one of the prisoners fighting alongside him had miraculously survived. (Manhwa context)
In an attempt to cruelly punish the wicked inmate, they presented him to a swarm of monstrous creatures who devoured him mercilessly. This disturbing event was omitted from the anime, thus also bypassing the complex moral dimensions that could have been portrayed in Jin-Woo’s character.
Cha Hae-In’s Increased Screen Time Altered the Plot
In the comic series, Cha Hae-In doesn’t make an appearance until chapter 65. However, the anime brought her into play as early as episode 1, and included extra minor scenes that helped fans get acquainted with this cherished character. This significant change notably affected the climactic scene of Season 2, episode 12. Following the defeat of the Ant King, Jin-Woo hastened to aid Hae-In and even utilized the Elixir of Life to revive her.
In the comic (Manhwa), Hae-In is largely unknown to Jin-Woo at this stage in the narrative, so the idea of using a valuable potion on her hadn’t crossed his mind. However, in the animated adaptation (anime), Hae-In plays a more significant role, and the anime version of Jin-Woo demonstrates greater concern for those around him. This is likely why the potion scenario was included in the anime.
Other Characters Also Lighten Jin-Woo’s Character
In the last episode of Season 2, Jin-Woo brought Min Byung-Gyu back from the dead as a shadow, primarily to save Cha Hae-In’s life. The animation gave this moment a more heroic flair. It was Byung-Gyu’s spirit that asked Jin-Woo for resurrection in order to heal Hae-In. However, in the comic version, Byung-Gyu’s spirit resisted being resurrected on numerous occasions, viewing it as morally questionable.
In the end, Jin-Woo compelled him to come back to life. This subtle alteration didn’t affect the final series of events, but it did suggest that Jin-Woo might disregard moral considerations when necessary.
Maybe it’s not working because he feels strongly opposed to becoming a shadow soldier.
I guess he thinks it’s immoral to turn a human being into one.

Why Do Fans Dislike These Changes?
These transformations significantly matter to numerous fans, as they shape the character of the main protagonist, Jin-Woo. It’s clear that Jin-Woo takes center stage in this narrative, yet it’s the recurring debates about his moral compass that make him a more intriguing and relatable hero.
In a less serious, more appealing way to a broader range of viewers, the anime attempts to depict its story. Although the anime keeps some ambiguity about the protagonist’s morality, it’s not as complex as it is in the original comic (manhwa).
No anime can fully capture its original content flawlessly. Despite some disgruntled fans due to alterations, it appears a significant number appreciate the adaptation. Even though no official announcement has been made, there’s already buzz about the upcoming season among enthusiasts.
