Sung Jin-Woo initially started off as a lowly E-Rank Hunter, but with the aid of a mysterious system, he’s now embarking on a quest to become the most powerful Hunter in history. In the narrative so far, Jin-Woo has successfully conquered numerous dungeons and fulfilled missions given by the System, amassing points and receiving valuable rewards along the way.
Jin-Woo’s abilities are increasing at a rapid, exponential pace, giving the impression that our hero could overpower any adversary currently. Yet, it’s crucial to note that despite his significant growth, Jin-Woo still has considerable ground to cover before he can truly claim the title of “The Strongest” entity in the Solo Leveling universe. This raises an intriguing question: Just how powerful is Jin-Woo at this stage in the narrative (Season 2)?
Warning: This post contains SPOILERS from Solo Leveling Manhwa.
Sung Jin-Woo’s Power Level At The Start Of Season 2
He’s A Little Behind S-Rank During The Red Gate Arc
Initially, Sung Jin-Woo was just an E-Rank, but upon gaining access to the System, he rapidly advanced in rank. Starting from the lowest point, he’s been known to conquer D-Rank magical creatures, as well as C and D-Rank bosses such as Venom-Fanged Kasaka. Moreover, he effortlessly defeated B-Rank Hunter Kang Taeshik. Thus, it’s quite clear that by the end of Season 1, Jin-Woo had reached A-Rank, though perhaps at a lower level. This is suggested by his battle against Igris, an A-Rank boss during the Job Change Quest, whom he eventually overcame and recruited into his Shadow Army. However, there’s a twist:
Jin-Woo ultimately vanquished Igris and integrated him into his Shadow Army, but there’s a condition.
In Season 2, when Igris was battling the leader of Ice Bear using his sword, Jin-Woo implied that he would have likely been defeated if Igris had employed his sword during the Job Change Quest. He speculated that they might now be evenly matched level-wise, but quickly amended his statement, admitting that he might still be the weaker of the two.
Only at my current level are we on equal footing…No, I might still be weaker. – Sung Jin-Woo
During the Red Gate Arc, Igris held an A-Rank position, making Jin-Woo, who was weaker than him, of a lower A-Rank status. It’s also important to note that Baruka, the leader of the Ice Elves, ranked as S-Rank. Given these facts, it’s no surprise that Jin-Woo struggled to defeat him, even with Igris by his side. This is why he enlisted another A-Rank Hunter, Kim Chul, into his Shadow Army. It required three A-Ranks combined to successfully take down this formidable enemy.
After vanquishing the Red Gate boss, it appears that our hero may have risen above Igris’ level, as demonstrated by the numerous alerts that appeared following the battle. Therefore, it can be inferred that Jin-Woo surpassed Igris’ level upon exiting the Red Gate.
Jin-Woo Reaches S-Rank After Defeating Baruka
But He’s Still Not The Strongest Hunter In Korea
Instead of every other character, Sung Jin-Woo doesn’t have a ceiling on his development. His abilities expand rapidly following each battle. Consequently, it’s not astonishing that he transitioned from an A-Rank Hunter to an S-Rank simply by passing through the Red Gate. This is evident in the manhwa when Sung Jin-Woo recalls the instance where Baek Yoonho, an S-Rank Hunter, places his hand on Jin-Woo’s shoulder. At that specific moment, Jin-Woo understands that he has merely attained the status of an S-Rank Hunter.
Upon encountering Baek Yoonho, it became clear to me that I was still climbing up to the S-Rank level.
Despite being promoted to the elite S-Rank club, Jin-Woo remains quite a distance from being the most powerful “S-Rank Hunter” following the Red Gate incident. Granted, he suggested he was on par with Baek, but it’s crucial to understand that in the Solo Leveling comic, Baek is regarded as one of the weakest S-Rank Hunters worldwide.
Retesting Arc Confirms Jin-Woo’s Rank
Prior to this, Jin-Woo’s rank was a matter of debate. However, it was definitively confirmed that he was an S-Rank after the Demon Castle Arc, when he decided to retest himself. As anticipated, he proved to be one of the top 10 Hunters in Korea, with an S-Rank status. Following the Red Gate incident, Jin-Woo faced formidable opponents during the Demon Castle Arc. He had already advanced to S-Rank after defeating Baruka, but his powers expanded even more as he completed several floors at the Demon Castle.
Sung Jin-Woo’s Rank By The End Of Season 2
He’ll Be The Strongest Hunter In Korea During Jeju Island Arc
It is anticipated, though not officially confirmed, that Season 2 of Solo Leveling may culminate during the Jeju Island storyline. The second season might conclude by hinting at more to come in the next season instead of wrapping up the Jeju Island arc completely. In any case, Sung Jin-Woo is expected to have become the strongest Hunter in Korea by the time he reaches the events unfolding on Jeju Island.
Indeed, during the Red Gate Arc, Jin-Woo was top-tier, or A-Rank, but he rapidly advances beyond that in the manhwa. Not only does he single-handedly conquer an A-Rank dungeon (during Hunters Guild Gate Arc), but also he vanquishes Baran, the King of White Flames, upon his return to the Demon Castle. This is a challenge that no Hunter in Korea has ever encountered. In essence, Jin-Woo is poised to make his debut in the Jeju Island Raid as the strongest individual in all of Korea.
It’s clear that there are other powerful Hunters worldwide, such as Thomas Andre, America’s top Hunter who hasn’t shown up in the anime yet. But, following the events on Jeju Island, no Korean Hunter will be able to rival Jin-Woo’s power. In fact, after the Jeju Island Raid, Jin-Woo is likely to be hailed as a “National Hero” and gain recognition from Hunters worldwide.
