The action-packed series Solo Leveling, takes readers on an exciting journey with protagonist Sung Jinwoo, who becomes increasingly powerful each time he defeats a formidable opponent. Over the course of the story, Jinwoo’s talents are continuously challenged.
Generally, the protagonist tends to prevail effortlessly more often than not. However, there are instances when he must exert himself and rely on his intelligence to gain an advantage. One such instance where Jinwoo had to give his all was during the Japan Crisis storyline. Yet, one might wonder, what exactly was this arc about?
What Is The Japan Crisis About?

The Japan Crisis storyline revolves around the emergence of a high-tier gate within Japan’s borders. This unexpected development sent shockwaves through the Japanese branch of the Hunters Association, leaving them in utter chaos due to the impending opening of such a powerful gate in their nation. Typically, they would have approached this challenge with greater assurance, but the devastating effects of the fourth Jeju Island raid still lingered. This tragic event had claimed over five top-tier Hunters, including Goto Ryuji, who was renowned as Japan’s strongest Hunter.
Consequently, Japan lacked the necessary means to manage such a complex gate, leading the higher-ups to explore alternatives for assistance. They turned to Yuri Orloff, a prominent Russian S-rank Hunter, for help with the gate. Known for his expertise in barriers, Yuri Orloff was confident that he could fortify an S-rank gate. Given Japan’s limited options, he demanded a substantial fee, which the officials found difficult to refuse due to their predicament.
The S-Rank Gate In Japan Caused A Lot Of Destruction

As the top-tier gate finally swung open, Yuri Orloff employed his power to prevent monstrous creatures from materializing. However, he swiftly understood that this tactic would be futile. One of the colossal beings shattered the protective barrier with a single powerful strike, leaving Yuri momentarily dazed. The Hunter hastily attempted to recreate the barrier, but the colossi were far too swift. A colossus picked up Yuri Orloff and flung him into the air before consuming him whole.
After Orloff’s departure, Japan found itself in a precarious situation, needing to lean on other Hunters and their resources. Meanwhile, Sung Jinwoo was engaging in discussions with Yoo Jinhoo regarding a potential journey to Japan. Despite Jinhoo’s efforts to dissuade him, Jinwoo remained resolute. He felt that if he could seal the gate, the reputation of the Ahjin Guild would echo far and wide across the globe.
Sung Jinwoo Closed The S-rank Gate On His Own
Immediately upon arriving in Japan, Jinwoo commenced calling forth his Shadows. He understood that there were far too many Giants and that he couldn’t handle all the territories simultaneously. Thus, the Hunter instructed his Shadows to assist him in combating the adversaries. In quick succession, they defeated every giant. Following the defeat of the gate-guarding giant, Jinwoo entered the gate where he encountered Legia, the Monarch of the Beginning.
I will make you believe it. —Legia
Legia spoke with Jinwoo and promised he would join forces with the hero in their battle against the Rulers. Despite his best efforts, Legia was attempting to persuade Jinwoo of his loyalty. However, Jinwoo saw straight through this deception and swiftly ended Legia’s life. Once Legia was gone, the gate finally shut.
The Hero Reached A New Level
Soloing an S-rank gate without assistance significantly boosted Ahjin Guild’s standing. People were amazed by the immense power displayed by guild leader Sung Jinwoo, leading many to speculate that he had surpassed national-level hunters. Given that a typical S-rank Hunter wouldn’t be able to handle such a feat alone, Sung Jinwoo garnered even more admiration and respect. In fact, not only did his peers acknowledge him, but renowned hunters also began taking notice.
