In the continuation of “Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow”, I find myself observing as a secondary squad of Hunters from the Guild navigate through treacherous High Orc territory, bracing for death’s imminent grasp. The yet-to-be-officially ranked S-Rank Hunter, Jinwoo Sung, initially chose to stay out of their affairs, but when the strike team captain was brutally attacked, his instincts took over, leading him into a potentially perilous scenario without fully comprehending the spectators he would draw.

In my view, this particular episode of the “Solo Leveling” anime surpasses all others that have come before it. It carries the same masterful touch as the animator who crafted the captivating battle between Sung Jinwoo and Bloodred Igris in season 1. This time around, the animation is nothing short of delightful, standing out as one of the finest examples of Winter 2025’s offerings.

Attracting All Kinds of Attention

Various Parties Find Themselves Drawn to the Dungeon

In the A-Rank Gate, Cha Hae In encounters the secondary strike team from the Hunters Guild in a life-or-death struggle. She’s prepared to join them, but instead, she meets the mining team’s leader. He proposes lending her some weapons, but he only has mining tools available. Initially refusing his pickaxe offer, she hesitates until pressed further. Eventually, she accepts the tool, providing a lighthearted, amusing moment amidst the grim circumstances surrounding Son Kihoon and his comrades.

Cha Hae In isn’t the only external entity who ventures into the Dungeon once they learn about Sung Jinwoo’s entry. Shortly after her, Supervisor Woo Jinchul from the Hunters Association steps in through the Gate as well, since Jinwoo’s impending S-Rank status attracts continuous monitoring.

Outside the Gate, the interactions were enjoyable due to their being a fun respite from the high-pressure situation within. They had a good sense of humor, such as when Woo Jinchul appeared, and one of the miners who tried intimidating Jinwoo on his initial day discovered that the Supervisor was there to monitor Jinwoo. It provided just the right amount of light-heartedness for the kind of episode we experienced.

You will be killed, tortured, and devoured one by one. For the enjoyment of my soldiers.

Faced With the Overwhelming Reality of Death

Son Kihoon Shows His Stuff, But It’s Nowhere Near Enough

At Kargalgan’s fortress, Son Kihoon and his band of hunters were taken aback by the overwhelming number of High Orcs. However, they also identified four particularly formidable figures who possessed such immense power that they could potentially destroy an entire city single-handedly. As commander of the squad assigned to shut down the Gate, Kihoon felt it was their duty to avert a Dungeon Break at any cost. Yet, his courage fell short in this dire circumstance.

When Kihoon decides to attack the orcs first, he’s taken aback but remains resolute as he finds himself charging at the Dungeon Boss solo, with his companions frozen in fear. The moment Kargalgan reveals his lethal intent, it becomes crystal clear that none of them will be walking out alive. However, the fear escalates to a boiling point when Kargalgan explains the reason for their journey to his headquarters: they are to be picked off one by one and brutally murdered for amusement. Despite confronting overwhelming strength and the devaluation of human life by the orcs, Kihoon’s courage in confronting the enemy deserves admiration.

Without further ado, Kargalgan swiftly overpowered him, repeatedly colliding him with both the ground and ceiling using his magic that manipulates gravity. The other Hunters could merely spectate as their leader was tossed haphazardly, akin to a doll. However, Jinwoo eventually intervened, explaining he had delayed only because the Hunters Guild held rights to the Dungeon; yet, they were now in grave danger. He posed a question to Kihoon, who was injured and battered, asking if he could handle all the monsters within the Dungeon. Kihoon consented, sensing that Jinwoo would be their redeemer. Confidently, Jinwoo prepared for battle, labeling it an unfavorable encounter for the High Orc shaman as he summoned a horde of Shadow Soldiers. Meanwhile, Cha Hae In progressively advanced towards the Boss Room, effortlessly defeating several High Orcs along the way.

“Let Me ‘Solo’ ‘Em”

Absolutely Stunning Animation Shines in Episode 6

Upon viewing Jinwoo’s Shadows, team B members can’t help but express their admiration with “oohs” and “aahs,” but as the episode unfolds, you might find yourself joining them. This is because the combat sequences that ensue are not only visually stunning but also fluidly animated, a sight to behold that one could only describe as a triumph.

In complex scenes involving multiple moving entities, such as armies or intense battles, there was a generous application of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). However, this technology didn’t overpower the general ambiance of the series; instead, it enhanced the textures we experienced in this particular episode. The familiar atmosphere of the show was complemented by the CGI, creating an intriguing blend that gave the Shadows, derived from High Orcs, a unique and captivating appearance and motion.

In this episode, as a thrilled viewer, I found that the impact frames were fleeting yet captivating, showcasing a style reminiscent of the Igris fight in season 1, with its distinctive blend of various artistic mediums. The masterful direction and storyboarding by Takayuki Kikuchi once again delivered an visually stunning spectacle, enriching the intensity of the Kargalgan battle. Wide, panoramic shots and dynamic tracking sequences provided a front-row vantage point to some of the action, including epic encounters between Igris, Tusk, Ice Bear, and the fearsome High Orc “Shitennō“.

In this episode, the dazzling series of events completely overshadowed any reservations I might have had about CGI. And then came the main event: Sung Jinwoo against Kargalgan! The shaman was taken aback to see his army retreating, prompting him to rise from his throne and engage in a serious battle. The strike team tried to intervene, but Kargalgan swiftly rebuked them, labeling their interference as presumptuous, claiming they were merely spectators trying to “steal the spotlight.” He hurled curses at Jinwoo, but fortunately for him, Kindairu’s Blessing nullified those annoying status effects. This allowed him to summon his Shadow Mages, powered by the Orb of Avarice, to retaliate fiercely!

All Too Familiar

Jinwoo’s Brand-New Shadow Experiences The Same Death

In the heat of battle, Kargalgan finds himself at his breaking point as his troops diminish and his strongest warriors succumb to becoming Shadows. Infuriated, he undergoes a massive transformation, mirroring the events from the Cartenon Temple Double Dungeon Incident, which Jinwoo refers to directly. The towering High Orc shaman summons a devastating spell, launching streams of dragon fire from multiple mouths that span the battlefield, annihilating both Jinwoo’s Shadows and his fellow orcs without mercy. Undeterred by the transformation, Jinwoo executes his signature dagger trick in midair, piercing Kargalgan’s eye with a swift strike. For Jinwoo, a larger adversary only means a more prominent target. Despite Kargalgan employing his most potent spells, the disparity in skill is too vast.

In the Boss Room, Jinchul Woo walks in as Jinwoo encircles Kargalgan with a massive chain, reminiscent of how he restrained the golem during season 1’s opening scene. With his four top generals against him, Kargalgan makes his last stand. Overpowered, he experiences a vision of his demise at their hands, strikingly similar to Jinwoo’s experience on the Cartenon Temple altar. After defeating the Boss, Jinwoo retrieves his Shadow and renames it “Tusk”, having momentarily forgotten Kargalgan’s original name. Unaware of Woo Jinchul and Cha Hae In’s presence, as well as the strike team, they all witnessed Jinwoo’s extraordinary powers during the battle.

Full-Circle

From Humanity’s Weakest to Possibly Its Strongest Weapon

At the end of everything, Son Kihoon demonstrates his refined nature by expressing gratitude towards Jinwoo for saving their lives, rather than delving too deeply into his personal matters. Following this, Cha Hae In’s romantic interest in Jinwoo seems to be firmly established as she reddens and inquires if he found her odd among the other Hunters.

This episode of Solo Leveling Season 2 has several captivating aspects, but one of the most striking similarities is its parallel to Jinwoo’s initial journey. Just as before, he was an ordinary member of a Hunter team, oblivious to the fact that they were walking into a deadly trap, which in some way, was intricately linked to the creation of the Solo Leveling universe and the emergence of the Gates.

In the previous episode, Jinwoo pointed out a significant difference: when faced with the same choice, this group took every possible action to save his life instead of fleeing like others did. The regard Jinwoo developed for them during the Raid played a role in their survival, demonstrating that he still possesses humanity despite his superhuman strength. Kargalgan’s last moments served as a tribute to Jinwoo at an earlier time, marking a full-circle moment since the weakest Hunter once labeled “Humanity’s Weakest Weapon” eventually established himself as one of its strongest. He overcame the same fear that once dominated his final moments back then.
