In the thrilling finale of Solo Leveling Season 2 -Rising from the Shadows-, we get a sneak peek at the unexpected arrivals of no less than two powerful figures, known as Monarchs. These characters, Rakan, the ruler of Fangas, and Sillad, the Ice Monarch, make their appearance on Jeju Island following the Fourth Jeju Island Raid Operation. Their actions are meticulously monitored by Sung Il Hwan, Jinwoo’s father, who seems to have a connection with them that remains to be fully explored in upcoming seasons or future episodes of the anime.

As a devoted fan of the captivating world of Solo Leveling, I find myself pondering over who these enigmatic figures are that are being referred to as “Monarchs.” In essence, Monarchs in this universe represent the strongest beings, the top-tier warriors with exceptional abilities. Now, their appearance in the upcoming anime adaptation is bound to stir up quite a storm among fans, and I can’t help but wonder about the potential consequences for our favorite protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, as he navigates through this perilous yet exhilarating realm.

The Context of Their Appearance

The Aftermath of the Fourth Jeju Island Raid

After Sung Jinwoo’s victory over the Ant King during the Fourth Jeju Island Raid Operation, and the overall success of this mission, Korea holds a memorial service to honor those who perished on Jeju Island or due to the Jeju Island S-Rank Dungeon Break that led to its tragic events. As most Hunters and the general public are engrossed in the memorial, the Knights Guild, under the leadership of Park Jongsoo, continues their work by eliminating any remaining ants on Jeju Island and guaranteeing that the ant menace has been completely eradicated.

As they carry out their tasks, they unexpectedly encounter Rakan, the Monarch of Fangs, or the King of Beasts, and Sillad, the Frost Monarch. Swiftly using his potent magic, Sillad puts everyone to sleep. When they reawaken, they find themselves struggling to comprehend speech, but Sillad’s powers allow them a fleeting understanding before they fall unconscious again. Upon arrival, these beings survey the surroundings and detect remnants of power, presumably belonging to Sung Jinwoo. This observation aligns with the fact that Sung Jinwoo achieved Level 100 shortly prior to departing Jeju Island, a significant milestone that initiates another layer of the power bestowed upon him by the System.

As a fervent fan, I can’t help but feel the impending importance mirroring the event that initially bestowed him this power. The title “Shadow Monarch” for Jinwoo isn’t just a label for his necromancy; it symbolizes the dormant power that the System was designed to nurture within him – the power of Ashborn, King of the Dead and the Ruler of Shadows, the Mightiest Fragment of Radiant Light. The arrival of Rakan and Sillad hints at the narrative’s exploration into the metaphysics of the Solo Leveling universe. This delve will uncover the authentic origins of the Gates, the source of Jinwoo’s enigmatic power, and let’s not forget, the true implications of the Cartenon Temple Double Dungeon Incident that sets the series in motion. It seems these two individuals, Rakan and Sillad, sensing the Shadow Monarch’s power, independently found themselves on Jeju Island, where they unexpectedly crossed paths.

So, Who Are These Guys?

About Rakan and Sillad

In simpler terms, Rakan is referred to as the “Monarch of Fangs,” the “King of Beasts,” or the “Beast Monarch.” He’s a fierce, arrogant, and bloodthirsty character who is part of the group of nine powerful beings called the Monarchs. The tale of the Solo Leveling universe begins with an ancient conflict between beings of light, known as the Rulers, and beings of darkness, like Rakan and his fellow Monarchs, which spanned over eons. As the narrative unfolds in Solo Leveling, it appears that the Monarchs will emerge as the main antagonists.

In a historical event, the leaders sought out the Solo Leveling demiurge, known as “The Absolute Being”. They requested additional power to vanquish their enemies, the Monarchs, and end the ongoing war. However, they discovered that the Absolute Being had prolonged the conflict because he found it amusing. Out of the eight leaders, only Ashborn attempted to protect the demiurge. The remaining seven, in a plot against him, killed the Absolute Being and severely wounded Ashborn during their attempt.

In his final moments, Ashborn believed himself to be lost due to his wounds, but he suddenly perceived a massive power concealed within him by the Supreme Entity, empowering him to resurrect as the Shadow Monarch, the Ruler of the Dead. Flipping sides, Ashorn hastened back to safeguard the Supreme Entity, yet it was already too late. The conflict escalated, and Ashborn found himself acting as a mediator as the Rulers seized one of the Monarchs; however, both factions grew suspicious of Ashborn’s power, leading to his betrayal by Rakan and Baran – the King of Demons and the White Flame Monarch. In essence, the third season of Solo Leveling may delve into the actions of Rakan, Sillad, and other Monarchs and Rulers as they pursue Sung Jinwoo to suppress the power coursing through him. This part is anticipated to be a crucial element in the storyline of Solo Leveling so far.

Solo Leveling is available on Crunchyroll.
