Summary
- The Elixir of Life failed to work on Cha Hae-In due to her low hit points after injuries.
- Jin-Woo crafted the Elixir after defeating the Demon Castle bosses to cure any illness.
- Jin-Woo’s decision to use the Elixir on Hae-In is an anime-only addition, showing his compassion.
Since gaining new abilities in Solo Leveling, Jin-Woo has always made it a priority to heal his mother. He’s been working tirelessly to grow stronger, aiming to vanquish the Demon Castle and create the Elixir of Life, which he believed could save her from a critical illness. However, when applied to Cha Hae-In’s wounds, the same elixir that miraculously cured his mother proved ineffective. Why did it fail this time?
In the popular series “Solo Leveling,” The Elixir of Life is known as one of its most potent artifacts. Jin-Woo conquered 100 floors within the Demon Castle and even engaged in combat with a clone of the Demon Monarch Baran, only to craft it unsuccessfully. One might wonder if Cha Hae-In’s condition is so severe that it’s beyond reversal?
What is the Elixir of Life?
The Legendary Potion, often referred to as the Sacred Elixir of Life, was concocted by Jin-Woo following his victory over the Demon Fortress. This mystical item is said to possess extraordinary healing abilities, curing any ailment with enchanting magic. To brew it, Jin-Woo vanquished numerous demons within the Demon Fortress, among them were:
- Vulcan: Boss of the 50th Floor that dropped World Tree Fragment
- Metus: Boss of the 75th Floor that dropped Spring Water From Echo Forest
- Baran: Boss of the 100th Floor that dropped Purified Blood of Demon Monarch
How Effective is the Elixir of Life?

Among all known concoctions, none match the potency of the Elixir of Life. This extraordinary potion has the power to heal any ailment or sickness. Yet, it’s important to note that it’s not a versatile remedy. It excels in curing the gravest of illnesses, such as Jin-Woo’s mother’s Eternal Sleep. However, it doesn’t have an impact on physical injuries, no matter how severe they may be.
Initially, during the process of brewing, Jin-Woo managed to produce six Elixir of Life concoctions. He utilized one to heal his mother, leaving only five remaining. In a critical situation, he opted to employ the second one on Cha Hae-In, but it proved ineffective.
Why Did the Elixir of Life Fail?
Cha Hae-In’s Condition

As South Korean Hunters were destroying the Ant Queen’s nest, they unexpectedly found the Ant King. Upon discovering that his queen had been killed, the Ant King became enraged and launched an attack. Hae-In, who has a keen sense for mana, began to feel queasy due to the Ant King’s proximity.
In the span of an instant, he swiftly zeroed in on Hae-In and delivered a powerful blow. The impact sent Hae-In crashing into a wall, causing her to sustain serious injuries. Upon Jin-Woo’s arrival, he observed that Hae-In’s complexion had paled dramatically and her vitality seemed to be rapidly diminishing.
Potions Were Ineffective

Upon arriving, Jin-Woo swiftly pulled out healing potions from his supplies and administered them to the wounded Hunters. In a flash, they were all fully restored to their best condition. Unfortunately, the potion didn’t take effect on Hae-In as her health was critically low, rendering it ineffective.
In Season 1, Episode 12, Jin-Woo encountered a predicament reminiscent of the one he faced earlier, as the potion proved ineffective due to his vitality being insufficient. With no other options available, he resorted to the Elixir of Life. However, this too proved futile since the Elixir of Life is designed to cure ailments rather than physical wounds.
So if you’re seriously injured, potions can’t restore your HP anymore?
I can either wait to heal naturally or try and get restored by leveling up…
– Jin-Woo, Season 1, Episode 12
An Anime Only Moment

It’s worth mentioning that the Elixir of Life, which is a unique aspect in the anime version, wasn’t used for Hae-In by Jin-Woo as it is in the original Manhwa (comic). This alteration might have been designed to portray Jin-Woo as a more thoughtful and compassionate character. The reason why the Elixir didn’t work, regardless of this change, remains the same.
In the comic book (Manhwa), instead of utilizing the Elixir of Life, Jin-Woo employed his Shadow Extraction abilities to rescue Hae-In. This tactic is expected to be repeated in the final episode of the upcoming season.
Once more, the intricacies of the world in ‘Solo Leveling’ remain shrouded in mystery. Equipped with powerful artifacts, Jin-Woo finds himself powerless to rescue a fellow warrior. Cornered, we wonder how Jin-Woo will harness his abilities to save Cha Hae-In?
Solo Leveling is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
