In the very same universe that’s home to the cherished Pillars of Eternity series, I find myself embarking on a journey three years after the tumultuous events of Deadfire. The world around me is no longer the familiar place it once was. As a godlike figure in Eora, I am tasked with a mission: to venture into the Living Lands and put an end to the enigmatic and deadly affliction known as the Dreamscourge.

As you progress through this journey, it becomes clear that you’ve been bestowed with a divine role as an enigmatic deity named Sapadal in the mysterious Living Lands. Your destiny lies either in liberating or bringing about destruction, contingent upon your decisions. Yet, even when the game reaches its conclusion, there are still some mysteries that remain unresolved.

Why Is The Envoy Not Born In The Living Lands?

In the course of the narrative, it becomes clear that every deity hailing from Sapadal originated in the Realm of Life. This is logical given that during the era of Ekida, Sapadal served as the island’s chief deity, and subsequently, during Nandru’s reign, Sapadal was bound and confined within the Garden.

Yet, it was revealed that our protagonist, the Envoy, was not a native of the Living Lands but hailed from the Aedyran Empire instead. This raises an intriguing question: why did Sapadal bestow her divine spark upon someone so far away across continents, rather than continuing with her previous practice of selecting godlikes within her own realm?

How Did Sapadal Come Into Being?

If you’re deeply fond of the Pillars of Eternity series and its background, then you’ll recognize that Sapadal is unique because she came into existence rather than being created, unlike the 11 gods of Eora, such as Woedica or Ondra.

The game doesn’t clarify the origins or cause behind the emergence of Sapadal, who is believed to be the first divine being. Sapadal herself admitted not knowing how she came into existence, only recalling that one day she simply woke up and found herself in existence, while the circumstances surrounding her birth remain unclear and intentionally vague.

Why Did The Godlike Disappear?

Right from the start, it’s clear in the narrative that the rare and diminishing race known as the godlike have disappeared from the continent of Eora. Initially, you are led to believe that you could be the only surviving godlike left on earth. However, this belief is shattered when you encounter Sargamis during the Dawntreader side quest.

Essentially, Godlikes serve as temporary repositories of divine power for their respective deities. According to Sargamis, these powers were presumably absorbed by the gods following the actions of Eothas in Deadfire. However, it’s important to note that this is merely a hypothesis, and Sargamis himself acknowledges that he has no definitive answers about what happened to his kin.

Is The Envoy Considered A Traitor Now?

Initially, our goal in visiting the Living Lands was solely to halt the advance of the Dreamscourge. However, we found ourselves drawn into the political complexities of the island, which significantly affected its destiny. Depending on your decisions, you could identify with the inhabitants of the Living Lands and strive towards unifying them, forming an independent entity that is not subject to any empire’s control.

If you opt for the Steel Garrote, eliminate Lödwyn and assume her position, you effectively become the ruler of the Living Lands as its king. This action, however, goes against the Aedyran Empire’s interests and power, since you serve the Emperor. Such actions could be seen as treachery towards Aedyr. The game’s endings do not seem to explore the repercussions of these choices, including whether or not Aedyr might retaliate with violence.

Are There More Godlikes Of Eothas Out There?

In our previous discussion, it was noted that the divine beings known as godlikes have vanished, except for Sargamis. Sargamis is a manifestation of Eothas, the deity who unleashed destruction in Deadfire and left countless lives in ruins. Interestingly, at the conclusion of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, it is believed that Eothas has perished.

Because the gods might have retained their divine powers by absorbing their counterparts, it’s plausible that Sargamis was spared since Eothas is believed to be deceased. This could imply that some of Eothas’ godly aspects may still be alive, potentially in hiding. Although there’s no definitive proof, you might persuade Sargamis to abandon his reckless plan and instead use the remainder of his life to search for other divine entities. However, it’s uncertain if he ever found any.

How Does The Dreamscourge Spread?

As a gamer, I’ve come to realize that being infected by the Dreamscourge is like losing my sanity bit by bit. Initially, I feel disoriented, as if lost in a foggy dream world. This mental haze persists until I can no longer tell fantasy from reality. To top it off, I start growing fungal or floral growths on my head and face, transforming me into a dreamthrall, ready to attack anyone without discrimination.

Nonetheless, it’s unclear how the Dreamscourge manages to infect individuals and then pass from one person to another. It appears to select its victims at random without any discernible pattern. Contrary to expectations, it doesn’t seem to be transmitted through the air or by physical contact, as some characters have remained unaffected even when in close proximity to an infected individual. Despite our newfound knowledge that Sapadal was behind the plague, the method of its spread continues to baffle us.

Is Sapadal More Powerful Than The Other Gods?

Exploring Sapadal’s tenure as the Ekida’s patron god reveals an intriguing sequence of events: Following Woedica’s destruction of the Ekida, Sapadal was confined. However, it is important to note that Woedica, who typically orders the elimination of beings for the sake of the world’s wellbeing, intended to slay Sapadal.

If Woedica had managed to slay Sapadal during their initial encounter, she wouldn’t have needed a second attempt. The fact that she failed suggests that perhaps Sapadal possesses extraordinary strength, or maybe there’s something unique about her origin that makes her resilient against death. Naturally, if this were the case, Woedica (or any deity) would be reluctant to admit it publicly.

Could There Be More New Gods Like Sapadal?

It is plausible that Sapadal is a naturally-occurring deity, rather than being artificially created like Berath or Eothas. It’s possible that other divine entities similar to Sapadal might have emerged independently across the world of Eora and chosen not to reveal themselves as Sapadal did.

It was through Sapadal’s action of contacting the other gods that they became aware of her existence. Had she not done so, it’s possible that these 11 deities might not have known about her or might have discovered her later. It is also plausible that some gods similar to Sapadal prefer to remain hidden, or are relatively new and still exploring the world much like she is. However, we can only speculate about this.
