Some owners of the original Nintendo Switch are disappointed that the upcoming version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the new Switch 2 will have content you can’t get on the older console. This frustration highlights a growing concern among fans about Nintendo re-releasing games for the Switch 2.
Nintendo revealed a version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the Switch 2 during their September 2025 Nintendo Direct. It will launch on March 26th with a longer title: Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park. This new edition includes a brand-new world called Bellabel Park, featuring 23 levels built for both cooperative and competitive multiplayer. The game will also introduce several new characters to play as, along with an Assist Mode to help players through difficult parts. This extra content won’t be available on the original Switch.
Fans Argue Some SMBW Switch 2 Edition Content Should Be Available on Switch 1
Some fans are upset that new content for Super Mario Bros. Wonder will only be available on the upcoming Switch 2. As the March release date nears, complaints are increasing. One Reddit user, The_Weeb282, gained a lot of attention on the r/Mario subreddit by expressing frustration that these additions feel like Nintendo is making people buy new hardware to get extra content, essentially charging for DLC through a console purchase. This post led to a lot of similar comments from other players.

Several of the mini-games in Bellabel Park are designed for the Switch 2’s mouse controls, but a lot of the new content could potentially work on the original Switch. Some players are upset that a helpful Assist Mode is only available with the Switch 2, feeling accessibility features shouldn’t be locked behind an upgrade. Many original Switch owners have suggested Nintendo should have offered the new content as downloadable content (DLC), similar to the $20 price on the Switch 2, instead of requiring a new console.
Recent complaints highlight a larger problem with how Nintendo is handling games for the new Switch 2. Specifically, the upgraded versions of older games have been inconsistent – both in what new features they offer and how much they cost. Sometimes, Nintendo offers these upgrades for free to owners of the original Switch games. Other times, they charge for them, even if the added content is minimal. A few very popular games, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, have paid Switch 2 versions that only improve performance without adding any new gameplay content.
Honestly, a lot of us gamers are a little frustrated with the pricing of the new Switch 2 games. It feels like we’re paying full price – like $79.99 – for what are essentially upgrades, not totally new games. It’s weird because a lot of other companies are offering big discounts on their Switch 2 titles, even for brand-new ports. Take Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, for example – I just saw it for $39.99 on the new system. It just doesn’t seem right that the base price for new players is so high when others are cutting prices so much.
Nintendo will announce its financial results in mid-May, covering the period up to March 31st. These results will likely give us the first indication of how well the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is selling, as it launched only five days before the end of that financial period. We probably won’t have a complete picture of sales numbers until August 2026.
