As a longtime movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of both beloved franchises, I can’t help but feel that the race between “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” reflects a significant shift in storytelling strategies.
A lion races a hedgehog, who wins? In the movie world, the hedgehog is about to come out on top.
This weekend sees the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” in cinemas. Initial indications suggest that Sonic the Hedgehog could claim victory at the box office (with more favorable reviews as well).
According to experts, Sonic is expected to earn somewhere around $60-$70 million, whereas the Lion King prequel is projected to make about $50 million.
Historic Box Office Comparison
While the gap between the films doesn’t seem like much, there’s more to the story.
The Lion King series, produced by Disney, stands out as one of their most unforgettable and cherished. When the live-action adaptation of the original film hit theaters in 2019, it raked in a staggering $77.9 million on its opening day alone. Over the weekend, the earnings climbed to an impressive $191.8 million.
Mufasa’s projected earnings of $50 million fall significantly short of the amount that Disney likely anticipated or aimed for.
Instead, let’s consider Paramount’s “Sonic 3”. Its initial release in February 2020 brought in $58 million. Contrastingly, “Sonic 2”, released in April 2022, raked in an impressive $72 million. If “Sonic 3” manages to open between $60-70 million, it won’t outperform the sequel, but it does indicate a consistent and ongoing interest in the video game franchise. Such sustained interest is not common for franchises other than those of Pokemon or Super Mario.
A Story of Progression
As a gamer, I find myself drawn to games with compelling narratives, and it’s clear to me how much a well-crafted story can enhance my gaming experience. What really stands out for me is the way stories are presented – or rather, the different ways they’re framed. Some games immerse you right away in the action, while others take their time to introduce you to characters and the world. The impact of these narrative framing choices on my overall enjoyment can be substantial.
The movie titled “Mufasa” offers a glimpse into the youthful days of Simba’s father and uncle, Mufasa and Scar respectively. Although we are familiar with their tragic ending, one might wonder if their early lives are captivating enough to warrant a separate storyline that remains untold in “The Lion King“.
Previous installments often struggle to match success, except for Star Wars. The Hobbit series earned less, when adjusted for inflation, than Lord of the Rings. And Fantastic Beasts didn’t keep up the enthusiasm or appeal that Harry Potter followers had.
Instead of Sonic 3, however, takes on the role as the next chapter in the narrative. It’s more about moving forward and expanding the universe and characters, rather than revisiting or explaining past events. This subtle shift in perspective lends it a unique and impactful appeal that may be overlooked.
Will There Be More Sonic Movies?
Today, it’s officially announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is in development and slated to hit screens in Spring 2027. This means there will be two movies between this and the previous one, with a gap of approximately two years.
Paramount also released a six-episode series about Knuckles on Paramount+.
Will There Be More Lion King Movies?
In a storytelling approach, Disney employs a narrative framed by Rafiki, the baboon, who recounts the history of Mufasa and Scar to Timon, Pumbaa, and later Kiara, the offspring of Simba and Nala. This suggests that future films in the series could be set in the same universe as Mufasa, focusing on characters like Kiara or an adult Simba, building upon their established storylines for sequels.
