Summary
- Princess Elise is an infamous and unpopular character, unlikely to feature in future Sonic movie projects.
- Marine the Raccoon is too niche and tied to DS titles, not a priority for a movie adaptation.
- Infinite received limited exposure in Sonic Forces, and is unlikely to debut in Sonic movies soon due to lack of popularity.
Sonic the Hedgehog, a renowned media empire today, has been thriving following its cinematic adaptations. The third installment of the series, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, was eagerly awaited, particularly since it featured one of the franchise’s most iconic characters, Shadow the Hedgehog, making his debut on the big screen. Fans were thrilled at the prospect of watching him and the storyline of a beloved Sonic game, Sonic Adventure 2, unfold in a movie.
While the Sonic franchise boasts an extensive cast of characters through the years, some well-loved faces might not grace the big screen despite fan anticipation. Additionally, certain other characters who are either linked to a specific game or lack current popularity among fans might struggle to appear in future Sonic film productions.
1. Princess Elise
A Notorious Character Who Tarnished The Sonic Franchise
- First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Any fan of Sonic the Hedgehog would undoubtedly recognize Princess Elise’s notorious reputation. Making her debut in the game Sonic ’06, she is the royal princess of Soleanna, often abducted by none other than Dr. Eggman. On numerous occasions, Sonic is tasked with rescuing her, and in a surprising twist, she revives him with a kiss when Mephiles takes his life. This romantic element is arguably one of the least welcomed aspects seen in a Sonic game so far. Consequently, it’s highly unlikely that this plotline would be incorporated if a movie were to draw inspiration from the notorious Sonic ’06.
In Paramount’s continuity, Knuckles has been depicted with the ability to control the “Flames of Disaster,” which was originally Elise’s power from the game. This suggests that her role could be made less significant if she were included, as these flames have been used elsewhere. However, Elise could still appear as a humorous reference or Easter egg, or her character could be redesigned for a more substantial role.
2. E-102 Gamma
A Lesser-Known Robot Compared to Metal Sonic or Omega
- First Appearance: Sonic Adventure
In the game “Sonic Adventure”, E-102 Gamma was introduced as one of Dr. Eggman’s advanced battle robots. However, he gained immense popularity among fans as he broke free from Eggman’s control and embarked on a personal mission to free himself and his fellow robots from the doctor’s dominion. Remarkably, he demonstrated selflessness by giving up his own life to rescue the Flicky creatures trapped within him.
Given that the storyline of the upcoming movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” appears to have taken significant inspiration from “Sonic Adventure 2”, it’s plausible that Paramount might not delve into the first “Sonic Adventure” game at this point. After all, elements from “Sonic Adventure” have already been subtly referenced through Easter Eggs in previous movies. If any robot character is expected to make an appearance, it’s either Metal Sonic or even E-123 Omega, given his connections with Shadow the Hedgehog. Since Gamma has met his end in the game, there wouldn’t be a reason to reintroduce him.
3. Sticks the Badger
Yet To Have Made A Canon Appearance in Gaming
- First Appearance: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric
In the storyline of “Sonic Boom”, a separate take on Sonic and his companions, as well as an entirely fresh environment, Sticks was initially introduced. Yet, Sticks was referenced in “Sonic Frontiers”, thus linking her to the primary series. Despite the relatively low popularity of the “Sonic Boom” spin-off show, it appears that screen time for this character, who is one of Amy’s closest friends, may be limited, even though she is a significant part of the circle.
In the 2016 Olympic Games edition of “Mario and Sonic,” sticks were included in the game, which was when this particular character first appeared. However, they were absent from the 2020 version. Given her limited appearances in canon, it seems unlikely she will show up again soon as introducing a new character properly into the main series takes time. It appears Sega may be moving away from focusing on this character for now.
4. Marine the Raccoon
From Another Dimension and Too Niche
- First Appearance: Sonic Rush Adventure
The Nintendo DS’s Sonic Rush collection introduced some exclusive new characters, including Marine the Raccoon, a lively and spirited character who assists Sonic, Tails, and Blaze in their journey, as depicted in Sonic Rush Adventure. It’s not very probable that this character will make an appearance in a Sonic film, given her limited presence outside of the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series.
Given that her initial story unfolds in the Sol dimension, it appears challenging to incorporate an additional dimension into the films, as they primarily focus on Earth and Sonic’s new human family. With Metal Sonic and Amy scheduled to appear for the first time on screen, Paramount seems more inclined to introduce main characters from the more widely recognized games rather than those from the DS titles. There is simply too much established material, lore, and popular characters from these games to tackle first.
5. Blaze the Cat
Has Too Much Complicated Lore
- First Appearance: Sonic Rush
In the series, Blaze is among the most powerful female characters, yet her frequent appearances don’t guarantee her inclusion in upcoming Sonic movies. Similar to Marine, much of Blaze’s backstory is tied to the Sonic Rush games that take place in an alternate universe. It appears these less mainstream games may not be given priority over the more established and well-known titles when it comes to future adaptations.
If a potential Sonic movie were to revolve around the storyline of Sonic ’06, where Blaze appears, she wouldn’t necessarily be the main character driving the plot. Furthermore, many fans find it challenging to reconcile her role in this game with the fact that she originated from an entirely different continuity. Given that Rouge was absent from Sonic 3, which draws heavily from Sonic Adventure 2, where she first appeared, there’s a possibility that Blaze might face a similar absence.
6. Tikal
A Character From The Ancient Past
- First Appearance: Sonic Adventure
Although Tikal didn’t serve as a playable character in “Sonic Adventure”, she played a pivotal role in its storyline. She is shown in flashbacks from the distant past, where she attempted to safeguard the Chao from her father and his aggressive tribe. In the current timeline, she manifests herself to Sonic as a glowing red orb.
It’s possible that the character Tikal was mentioned in either a Sonic movie or the Knuckles TV series, but it appears that her inclusion is no longer probable. This is similar to Gamma, as the movies have shifted away from Sonic Adventure. Furthermore, as we see in the films, the storyline of the Master Emerald is intertwined with new Owl characters battling against the Echidnas, suggesting that Tikal’s role might be taken by these new characters. Additionally, given her origin in the distant past, it would be challenging to incorporate her into the current storyline.
7. Chip
His And Sonic’s Friendship Would Feel Too Unnecessary
- First Appearance: Sonic Unleashed
In “Sonic Unleashed,” I embarked on an extraordinary globe-trotting journey, all thanks to Eggman’s destructive act of shattering the world into pieces! During this adventure, I crossed paths with a remarkable character named Chip. As our journey unfolded, we grew closer and eventually formed a strong friendship.
It appears rather improbable that Sonic Unleashed would get priority over the other games that come after Sonic Adventure 2. Moreover, the movies might concentrate on the principal Sonic characters and their human kin, making Chip and Sonic’s connection seem out of tune and superfluous. Among all the characters who could be presented with their histories, it’s not common for Chip to be given priority over more renowned and consistent ones.
8. Infinite
A Relatively New And Underused Villain
- First Appearance: Sonic Forces
In “Sonic Forces,” fans felt that the antagonist, Infinite, had not been fully utilized. Endowed with the power to alter his environment using the Phantom Ruby, Infinite has immense potential that the game failed to fully explore.
Although Infinite, a character from the newer Sonic game, hasn’t gained the same level of fame as classic games such as Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Heroes, it’s highly improbable that he would make an appearance in a Sonic movie anytime soon. The Master Emerald, which has already been showcased on-screen, seems more iconic than the Phantom Ruby, so substituting one magical gem for another less recognized one might feel uninteresting and redundant. Similarly, Sonic Forces didn’t enjoy as much popularity as some other Sonic games, making it less beloved compared to titles like Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Heroes.
