Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is getting a SpongeBob SquarePants DLC on November 19, 2025. The game also announced that three new free characters will be added to the racing lineup soon.
Although people often compare Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds to Mario Kart World, the Sonic game really emphasizes bringing in characters from lots of different franchises, including those outside of Sega. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did add a few characters from other Nintendo series, but Mario Kart World has mainly focused on characters from the Mario universe.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Announces SpongeBob DLC Release Date and More
Sega announced that the SpongeBob SquarePants DLC will be available starting November 19, 2025, at 5 PM Pacific Time. This DLC adds SpongeBob and Patrick Star as playable characters, along with a new race track based on Bikini Bottom, the Patty Wagon vehicle, six unique emotes for each character, and music inspired by SpongeBob. It’s included in Wave 2 of the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds season pass, but can also be bought on its own when it releases.
Fans are looking forward to the upcoming SpongeBob content, but there are also several other free characters and vehicles coming to the game before the end of 2025 and into 2026. In December, NiGHTS, a popular character from the 1996 Sega game Nights into Dreams, will join the roster along with the Dream Sleeper vehicle. Then, in January 2026, AiAi from Super Monkey Ball will become a playable character, arriving with the Banana Cruiser. Finally, in February 2026, Tangle and Whisper from the Sonic universe will be added as racers, though their vehicle hasn’t been announced yet.
Sega’s Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is shaping up to be a big hit for fans. It’s coming to the Switch 2 before the end of 2025, potentially reaching a wider audience. Beyond the initial release, Sega plans to add downloadable content featuring characters, tracks, and vehicles from other popular franchises like Pac-Man and Mega Man, with more surprises still to come. They’re even asking players who they’d like to see added, suggesting ongoing support and plenty of fan-favorite characters in the future.
