Sega announced that Ichiban Kasuga from the Yakuza series will be a playable character in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds starting in early November. This racing game, featuring Sega’s famous Sonic the Hedgehog, is known for bringing in characters from other franchises. We already knew to expect guests like Pac-Man, Mega Man, and SpongeBob SquarePants, and now another popular Sega character is joining the fun!
For years, Sonic the Hedgehog was Sega’s most popular game. But recently, the Yakuza series – an action-adventure franchise about Japanese gangsters – has become a huge hit worldwide. The latest main game, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, was even nominated for “Best RPG” at the 2024 Game Awards. The series has expanded with spin-off titles like Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Like a Dragon: Ishin!, which is set in feudal Japan. Now, for the first time, characters from these two worlds will collide, as Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza will race alongside Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sega announced today that characters from the Yakuza series are coming to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as downloadable content. During a livestream event, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio revealed that Ichiban Kasuga will be playable in the game starting November 6th. Players can also look forward to a unique vehicle, custom decals, and a special nameplate for Ichiban. To celebrate, a Yakuzathemed festival will be added to CrossWorlds* on November 7th.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Confirms Ichiban Kasuga Release Date
- Ichiban Kasuga joins Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on November 6.
- A Yakuza-themed festival will begin on November 7.
Okay, so I was totally shocked to see Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza show up in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds! It’s already got a ton of unexpected characters, but that one really threw me. And it wasn’t just him – they added content from SpongeBob and even Minecraft! You can actually race as Steve, Alex, and a Creeper! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any crazier, they dropped a Persona 5 DLC earlier this month. Now I can play as Joker and there’s a whole *Personathemed festival in the game. It’s wild!
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will continue to add new content through collaborations, with plans extending into 2026. Following crossovers with Pac-Man and Mega Man, Sega has hinted at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles content in Spring 2026 and Avatar: The Last Airbender content in Summer 2026. The game’s producer, Takashi Iizuka, has even asked fans what other collaborations they’d like to see, suggesting the possibility of multiple years of downloadable content. Overall, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds promises a steady stream of exciting expansions for fans.
