Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Post-Credit Scene Honors One Of The Best Sonic Games Ever

As a long-time fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, I must say that the latest news about the upcoming films and games has me absolutely thrilled! Growing up with the original Sonic games on Sega Genesis, I can vividly remember the excitement and joy they brought to my childhood. Seeing the franchise evolve over the years, with its ups and downs, has been quite a rollercoaster ride.

This article contains spoilers for Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Summary

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reunites familiar faces and introduces new characters like Shadow and Amy Rose.
  • Post-credit scenes hint at a darker future for the franchise, with Metal Sonic and possible spin-offs.
  • The legacy of Sonic CD influences the direction of the movie, teasing a spacefaring adventure and time travel plot.

Once again, the iconic blue blur is making a comeback in our world, with Jeff Fowler resuming his directorial duties for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. Ben Schwartz lends his voice to the leading character Sonic, while other familiar faces like Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails) and Idris Elba (Knuckles) return. The three characters take on Jim Carrey who portrays Dr. Ivo Robotnik and Professor Gerald Robotnik in a double role. Additionally, Keanu Reeves joins the “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” cast for the first time as Shadow the Hedgehog. Naturally, Keanu Reeves isn’t the only fresh face in this new installment of “Sonic the Hedgehog”.

Ever since the debut of “Sonic the Hedgehog” in 2020, Fowler has been hinting at the next chapter through a sequence of mid and post-credit scenes. The first hint was Tails for the 2020 sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, which paved the way for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” with the Shadow reveal. It appears that some of the Sonic games provide a loose basis for the movies, and given the current trend, it seems likely that “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” will be influenced by the popular “Sonic CD”.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s Post-Credit Scene Finally adds Amy Rose and Metal Sonic

As a diehard Sonic fan, I can’t help but reflect on the gripping finale of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”. The heart-wrenching scene where Shadow seemingly gives his life (but let’s delve deeper into that detail later) by launching Gerald Robotnik’s defective Eclipse Cannon into outer space, leaves a lingering question about Shadow’s future in the franchise. However, even Ivo Robotnik seems to meet an unexpected heroic end. Tom, portrayed by James Marsden, miraculously recovers from his wounds, and the heroes regroup on Earth. But wait, there’s more! The post-credit scenes offer two groundbreaking additions to the lore, introducing beloved video game characters into the mythos.

As I crossed the finish line at a New York state park, beating both Tails and Knuckles, an unexpected figure appeared – Metal Sonic. Although it seemed like we’d never met, this metallic doppelganger had been dogging my steps all along, and was soon accompanied by an ominous line of clones emerging from the woods. Originating from Dr. Eggman (Ivo Robotnik) in the 1993 game Sonic CD, Metal Sonic is a lethal Badnik robot with the sole purpose of eliminating the one and only me, Sonic. With Shadow, the gun-toting character, setting a darker tone for the third movie, it looks like audiences are in for more of Metal Sonic’s ruthless antics.

I’m grateful that a mysterious figure in robes saves Sonic, turning out to be none other than my dear friend Amy Rose! With a flash of pink, she swoops in to save the day, and it wasn’t long before we learned that she was officially joining the Sonicverse. Swinging her iconic Piko Piko Hammer, Amy swiftly dispatched the Metal Sonic army, showing she’s going to be a significant figure in Sonic 4.

The Sonic universe expands further, and contrary to earlier suggestions of Shadow’s demise, there’s a surprising twist as a pair of recognizable shoes appear and Shadow retrieves his golden bracelets. Given whispers about a possible Shadow spin-off like Idris Elba in the Knuckles series, it’s logical that the studio would leverage Reeves’ popularity. Upcoming events may see Metal Sonic providing the team with an adversary to confront, while Amy Rose might develop into Sonic’s love interest. Critics have voiced concerns over Amy’s portrayal in games, particularly when she seems excessively smitten with Sonic despite his potential lack of romantic feelings for her. This new interpretation presents a tough-as-nails heroine similar to Lara Croft, rather than just another stereotypical character.

The Legacy of Sonic CD

Alongside games like Sonic Generations, Sonic Mania, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic CD is often included in discussions about the top-tier Sonic franchise titles. Initially, it was a port of the 1991 game Sonic the Hedgehog, but co-creator Naoto Ohshima aimed to demonstrate the full potential of the Sega CD system. The project eventually grew into something much more substantial, becoming the best-selling Sega CD game after it sold an astounding 1.5 million copies. However, some critics argue that Sonic CD didn’t fully exploit the capabilities of the Sega CD hardware.

Besides earning recognition as one of the top Sonic games, Sonic CD has continued its impact through various iterations. This includes a Windows PC version released in 1996, and later inclusion in the Sonic Gems Collection for PlayStation 2 and GameCube in 2005. A remake using Retro Engine was also introduced in 2011 and was eventually part of the 2022 Sonic Origins compilation. Given its space-exploring and time-traveling nature, the future of the series might draw inspiration from these elements hinted in Sonic CD.

In Sonic CD, Sonic was on a mission to prevent Doctor Robotnik from acquiring the mystical Time Stones and controlling an alien world named Little Planet. With Jim Carrey re-entering the scene for Sonic 3 and it appearing that Robotnik has been defeated, it might be time to introduce a new adversary. Metal Sonic could take on the role of the antagonist, especially if future Sonic games follow in the footsteps of Sonic Heroes. This scenario becomes even more plausible considering whispers of a Sonic Heroes remaster being in development.

In the initial version of “Sonic Heroes”, Sonic and Tails receive a warning from Doctor Robotnik about his intent to conquer the world using his Egg Fleet. However, it was later discovered that Robotnik hadn’t been communicating with them at all; it was actually Metal Sonic who had betrayed his master’s instructions. In an interview with Dexerto regarding “Sonic 4”, Fowler mentioned that he enjoys selecting concepts from various games and referred to the process as a ‘mixing pot’.

It seems natural that since Sonic 3 returns to the setting of Sonic Adventure 2 where Shadow first emerged, it appears to be the ideal spot for incorporating plot points and the overall atmosphere we believe will excite fans. This was a deliberate emphasis on a particular aspect.

In other sources, Fowler might have drawn inspiration from the “Sonic the Comic” series in which discarded Metal Sonic robots formed the Brotherhood of Metallix and created their own ruler called Emperor Metallix. Much like how “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” took cues from “Sonic Adventure 2” and “Shadow the Hedgehog”, fans can anticipate “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” to be a blend of popular Sonic games. Moreover, with “Sonic 3” having grossed over $62 million at the box office, this franchise appears poised to maintain its fast pace atop the charts for quite some time.
