Sonic the Hedgehog Star Shares Hopes For Future Crossover Movies

Summary

  • Ben Schwartz wants Sonic to crossover with Chris Pratt’s Mario in a movie.
  • Schwartz is also hoping to see a Super Smash Bros. movie transpire in the future.
  • Paramount has confirmed a fourth Sonic movie is in development, hinting at a bright future with new characters.

As a seasoned movie buff with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation when it comes to the future of SEGA’s beloved blue hedgehog, Sonic. Ben Schwartz, the talented voice actor behind our spiky-haired hero, has already proven his mettle in the first three films, and now he’s aiming even higher. His dreams of a crossover between Sonic and Mario, as well as a potential Super Smash Bros. movie, are not just wishful thinking but a testament to the power of collaboration in the world of cinema.

The movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has just hit the big screens, and one actor is already excited about continuing Sonic’s adventure. There’s a possibility he might bring one of the blue hedgehog’s most popular video game collaborations to life on screen next.

Paramount Pictures has made substantial investments in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, resulting in a trilogy of movies and a streaming spin-off series titled Knuckles. Ben Schwartz lends his voice to Sonic, alongside an impressive cast that includes Idris Elba (Knuckles), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), Keanu Reeves (Shadow), and Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik). A fourth Sonic film is in the works, and with the video game character continuing to perform well at the box office, the future looks promising for additional blue hedgehog escapades, especially following those post-credit scenes.

Sonic the Hedgehog Star Wants a Crossover With Other Franchises

As a passionate movie-goer, let me share my perspective on Ben Schwartz’s desired direction for Sonic: he’s keen to explore the realm of crossovers! Two specific scenarios he mentioned that pique my interest are a collaboration with Mario in the style of the “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games” series. This concept has been successfully executed six times, mirroring various Olympic Games and garnering widespread appeal for both mascots. I can’t help but admire Chris Pratt, who plays Mario – a topic we should avoid discussing in this conversation – but I genuinely think the “Olympic Games” idea is fantastic! Incidentally, Chris Pratt’s “Super Mario Bros. Movie” falls under Universal Pictures, so a crossover between these two franchises would necessitate a deal between Universal and Paramount.

As a die-hard cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement about a potential collaboration that’s been brewing in my mind: a live-action Super Smash Bros. film! I honestly believe it could be a box office bonanza if we manage to pull off a Super Smash Bros. spinoff. But, let’s be real, that would require numerous studios playing nicely together at the same time, which isn’t always easy in the world of entertainment. If this dream project ever comes to fruition, I can only hope they’d consider me for voicing Sonic, given his notable appearance as a fighter in Bandai Namco’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Universal’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was one of the biggest hits in 2023, so a team-up featuring these iconic video game characters isn’t entirely out of reach. Rumors have it that Illumination has received a pitch for such a film, but progress seems to be slow, perhaps due to the complex legal and licensing hurdles involved with all the characters.

“What I really think could be bananas is if we get a Super Smash Bros. spinoff, but that would take so many different studios being kind to each other at the same time. But the idea that we get to build our own franchise that lives on its own, and we have so many characters within this franchise, that we can do three, four, five, six — that’s what I’m concentrating on and that’s what I love. If you want to have a battle royale with a bunch of people we all love in video games, because I’m a video game nerd, I would not be against it. I would see if Paramount would let me go play.”

The upcoming Sonic movie sequel looks set to be an epic one, given the tantalizing glimpses at the end of the third installment. A fourth Sonic film is under production, aiming for a 2027 premiere. This new chapter will feature both beloved and fresh characters.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is currently in theaters worldwide.
