Sony Admits Its Live Service Games Shift Isn’t Going “Smoothly”

Sony says that its shift in strategy to more live service games has been “going smoothly”.

During a recent earnings discussion on Thursday, the company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Lin Tao, mentioned that the shift towards providing more live services is experiencing some bumps but, looking at the bigger picture, if we examine the changes over a five-year span, it’s clear that transformation has indeed occurred.

Later on, Tao discussed how live service games were scarcely present within PlayStation Studios five years ago. However, currently, the studio boasts successful titles like Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo 7, Destiny 2, and MLB The Show.

In summary, even with their past achievements, Tao indicates that Sony acknowledges persistent challenges they must address and learn from. She suggests that the company should focus on introducing live service content which would ideally involve reduced waste and a smoother experience overall.

To put it simply, Tao emphasized that around 40% of Sony’s earnings from the initial quarter came from live service games. Throughout the entire year, she estimated that this percentage falls within a range of 20% to 30%.

Here’s to hoping for a smooth launch!
