Recent court filings show Sony is trying to halt Tencent from using characters and features that look like Aloy and come from the Horizon game series. They’ve requested a preliminary injunction to do so.
Sony has sued Tencent in federal court in California, alleging that Tencent is copying Sony’s copyrights and trademarks. Sony previously criticized Tencent’s new game as a clear imitation and is now asking the court to stop Tencent from releasing it.
Sony Wants to Hold a Hearing Next Month
Sony is asking a court to temporarily block Tencent from continuing work on a game that Sony claims copies its ‘Horizon’ series. According to Games Fray, Sony filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent Tencent from reproducing, adapting, showing, playing, or distributing anything copied from Sony’s ‘Horizon’ games, specifically ‘Light of Motiram,’ and to stop them from using a character design similar to Aloy until the case goes to trial.
The Aloy character is described as a strong, young warrior with red hair and striking features, wearing clothes that combine traditional tribal designs with metallic, industrial parts. The legal request also aims to prevent Tencent from using any visuals, sounds, or story ideas from the Horizon game series.
Sony is requesting that Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley, who oversaw the FTC’s case against Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, schedule a hearing by November 20, 2025, and issue a decision by the end of that month or in December. Along with its request, Sony submitted official statements from key personnel, including representatives from Guerrilla Games Studio, its art and music directors, the head of PlayStation Productions, and a Sony brand IP director.
