Even though the PlayStation 5 has been available for six years, it doesn’t have as many unique games as the PlayStation 4 did at this stage. This is partly because the pandemic slowed down game development, and partly because Sony’s plans for ongoing, online games haven’t gone as expected. As a result, PlayStation Plus has been mostly offering older PlayStation 4 games each month. Sony originally said this would change in January 2026, with PS4 games no longer being a main feature of the service. However, that hasn’t happened, and it’s unclear when it will.
Gamers have been wondering how recent changes would affect PlayStation Plus. Specifically, they’ve been asking if the service will offer more full PS5 games, or if it will simply provide fewer games each month, similar to what happened when PS3 games were removed from the monthly lineup. PS4 players who haven’t upgraded to PS5 were particularly concerned, as they feared they’d no longer receive monthly games. However, it appears Sony isn’t following through with the planned changes, as more PS4 games have been announced for February 2026 – marking the second month in a row where the company hasn’t made the expected shift.
February 2024’s PS Plus Essential Games Are Just as PS4-Focused as Ever Before
- Undisputed (PS5)
- Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PS4)
- Ultros (PS4, PS5)
- Subnautica: Below Zero (PS4, PS5)
The February 2026 PlayStation Plus games mostly feature titles from the PlayStation 4 era, with the boxing game Undisputed being the exception – it’s only available for PS5 owners. Subnautica: Below Zero will be the main attraction for most players, and it can be downloaded on both current and older PlayStation consoles. The same is true for Ultros, a vibrant space exploration game. Ace Combat 7 is unique because it’s a PS4 game that hasn’t been updated for newer consoles. While its inclusion might be timed to build excitement for the upcoming Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, adding a game that’s exclusively from the PS4 generation seems to contradict Sony’s stated plans for 2026.
February’s PS Plus games follow a recent trend. Similar to January 2026, the lineup includes a PS5 game and several PS4 titles. January featured a remastered PS4 game, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, alongside Ace Combat 7 and ports of The Stanley Parable for both PS4 and PS5. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was the free PS5 game. So far in 2026, PS Plus is continuing its usual pattern of offering one dedicated PS5 game and a selection of PS4 games.
PS4 Fans Can Celebrate, But They Shouldn’t Get Too Comfortable
This is welcome news for PlayStation 4 owners who haven’t upgraded to the PS5, as they still have time to download the January free games and can look forward to more in February. While Sony’s continued support for the PS4 is a nice surprise, it’s unclear when they’ll finally stop offering PS4 games through PlayStation Plus. It’s possible Sony is gradually phasing out PS4 support, giving players time to adjust instead of abruptly ending it. However, it’s all speculation – we don’t know why Sony hasn’t followed through with their plans yet, or when the changes will actually happen.
Even if older PS4 games and those playable on both PS4 and PS5 are removed from the service, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium will still offer a large library of games from previous generations of consoles.
When Sony eventually stops including PS4 games in its PlayStation Plus subscription service, it will be worth watching how the basic “Essential” tier changes. PlayStation Plus usually offers 3 or 4 free games each month for Essential members, and that’s likely to continue. We might even see months with only three games more often, as older PS4 titles like Ace Combat 7 are phased out. However, this change could also mean more games are available only on PS5, which would be a good thing for PS5 owners, even if PS4 players are disappointed. So far, though, Sony hasn’t acted on its warning that PS4 games won’t be a major perk anymore – the games offered in January and February were the same as usual.
