Sony is now selling a PS5 Digital Edition in Europe with less storage space – 825 GB, down from the original amount. This change has sparked some debate, especially as console prices have been increasing globally during a challenging year for the gaming industry.
When the PlayStation 5 (PS5) launched in 2020, it cost $500 with a disc drive or $400 as a digital-only version. Unlike previous consoles which usually became cheaper over time, the PS5’s price has consistently increased. For instance, the digital version saw a $50 price hike in 2023. Just last month, prices in the US went up again to $500 for the digital edition, $550 for the standard version, and $750 for the PS5 Pro. Europe has experienced similar increases, with the Digital Edition reaching €500 in April 2025.
Sony’s PS5 Digital E Chassis Model With Only 825 GB of Storage Space Is Being Sold in Europe
A new version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (model CFI-2216) quietly launched in Europe on September 13th, and it has less storage space than previous models – only 825 GB compared to the usual 1 TB. This is a significant decrease, especially since this version doesn’t support physical game discs. When the storage reduction was first announced, some believed it was a way to prevent the console’s price from increasing further in Europe, but that hasn’t been officially confirmed.
Sony’s recent price adjustments have impacted the cost of its games. While games still typically cost $70 in the US, prices have gone up in Brazil and Turkey. In Brazil, new AAA games now average around $75, and in Turkey, they cost about $84.
Even with some existing problems, the PlayStation 5 is still selling very well. Over 80.3 million units have been sold globally since it launched. This means the PS5 is getting close to matching the total lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3 – it’s only about 7.1 million units behind. However, it still has a long way to go to surpass the PlayStation 2, which remains Sony’s best-selling console ever. The PS5 is currently selling significantly better than the Xbox Series X/S, which has sold over 32 million units.
