Sony-Owned Company Releasing Game Only on PC and Switch

Sony-Owned Company Releasing Game Only on PC and Switch

Highlights

  • Fate/Stay Night Remastered has received a release date, August 8.
  • Despite being published by Sony Group subsidiary Aniplex, this visual novel will only be available on the Switch and PC.
  • Visual novels, including those published by Aniplex, often skip PlayStation consoles.

As a long-time fan of visual novels and someone who has followed the Fate/Stay Night series since its early days, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed that the remastered version won’t be gracing PlayStation consoles. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled to see it coming to Switch and PC, but as someone who has invested countless hours into playing these games on my PS Vita back in the day, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia that’s tinged with a bit of sadness.

The remastered version of Fate/Stay Night has been given a release date: August 8th. However, this release will only be available on Nintendo Switch and PC platforms, as it bypasses PlayStation consoles, even though it’s being published by Aniplex Inc., which is part of Sony Group.

Originally created by game developers Type-Moon, “Fate/Stay Night” is a visual novel that first appeared on personal computers in 2004. Later adaptations for PlayStation 2 and PS Vita followed in 2007 and 2012, respectively, with mobile versions emerging in 2015. However, none of these editions have ever been distributed internationally. In early 2024, Aniplex revealed plans to update the PS Vita version of “Fate/Stay Night” for release on Nintendo Switch and personal computers.

Fate/Stay Night Remastered Is Skipping PlayStation Consoles

Approximately seven months have passed, and the publisher has finally set a definite launch date for the remaster – August 8th. However, their recent announcement has made it clear that Fate/Stay Night Remastered will only become available on Steam and eShop. At this point, they haven’t provided any details regarding the reasons behind the decision to exclude PlayStation consoles from this release.

PlayStation Consoles Don’t Get Many Visual Novels

A plausible reason why we’re not seeing Fate/Stay Night Remastered on PS4 or PS5 right now could be that visual novels aren’t a widely popular niche on Sony consoles compared to PC or handheld devices, such as the Nintendo Switch. Historically, visual novels have been more prevalent on PC and handhelds, while they are less common on home consoles like the PlayStation and Xbox. As a result, it could be that Aniplex decided against releasing a PS version of Fate/Stay Night Remastered for now, given its lower potential market on these platforms.

The remaster of Fate/Stay Night won’t be the first game published by Aniplex to bypass Sony’s consoles. In fact, just last month, the visual novel Hookah Haze skipped Sony’s platforms and was released on the Switch and PC on July 11. Similarly, visual novels like Hira Hira Hihiru and Murder Mystery Paradox: Fifteen Years of Summer were initially launched as PC-only titles in late 2023. The tactical RPG The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is set to follow this trend in early 2025, with Aniplex only planning to release it on Nintendo’s hybrid console and PC.

Hey there fellow gamers! Exciting news for us all, the much-anticipated remastered version of “Fate/Stay Night” is about to hit the shelves at a retail price of $29.99. But here’s the kicker – until August 21st, you can grab it with a sweet 10% discount! You can pre-order now on its eShop page. As for the Steam listing, pricing details are yet to be revealed.
