A recently discovered Sony patent details ‘Ghost Player,’ an artificial intelligence system designed to help gamers who are stuck – and even play the game for them automatically.

Sony often patents technology long before it appears in their products. We’ve already seen patents related to the DualSense controller, like using special ink and swapping the touchpad for a touchscreen. Now, a new patent suggests Sony is exploring AI that could potentially allow the console to play games on its own.

Sony’s Ghost Player AI Patent Talks About a ‘Guide Mode’ and a ‘Complete Mode’

A new Sony patent details ‘Ghost Player’ AI technology that can help players in games. This AI can function in two ways: ‘Guide Mode’ offers hints and shows players how to overcome challenges – imagine an AI-controlled Nathan Drake demonstrating how to beat a level in Uncharted. Alternatively, ‘Complete Mode’ allows the AI to play entire sections of a game for the player.

Sony is developing “Ghost Player” AI that learns how to play games by watching existing online gameplay videos. This means developers won’t need to create a pre-programmed character for the AI to control. This technology could improve PlayStation’s existing Game Help feature, which currently provides players with hints, tips, images, and video guides to help them overcome challenges.

Just because a company gets a patent doesn’t guarantee the technology will actually become available. It could take years to develop and launch, or it might never see the light of day.
