Last year, when Astro Bot was named Game of the Year at The Game Awards, I couldn’t help but think that the team behind it must have felt a huge sense of validation. This tiny platformer, against all expectations, had managed to grab the most coveted prize of the year, demonstrating its exceptional quality and charm.

It was also observed by the higher-ups in the PlayStation division, as well as Sony’s President Hiroki Totoki himself.

More Family Games Like Astro Bot Are On The Way From PlayStation

During a recent conference call discussing Sony’s quarterly financial results, Sony President Hiroki Totoki discussed the success of Astro Bot and expressed plans to grow their game library with more options suitable for families in the future.

At The Game Awards 2024, our game Astro Bot swept four awards, among them Game of the Year and Best Family Game – a record number of wins for any title, as stated by Totoki.

Moving forward, Totoki mentioned, “Moreover, Helldivers 2, our live service game launched in February of last year, was honored with both the Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game accolades. The recognition of titles similar to those we aim to develop, such as family-oriented games and live services, is a significant step towards diversifying our collection of quality games.

Although no specific details were revealed, this is a positive sign for the franchise, and it hints at more family-friendly games coming to PlayStation consoles in the future.

Besides receiving rave reviews from critics, Astro Bot has proven to be a significant commercial triumph as well. Last November alone, it managed to sell more than 1.5 million units, although Sony hasn’t revealed any further sales targets since then.

On the platform Open Critic, this title boasts a highly favorable “Mighty” rating and an astounding 99% approval rate from critics. The game is so exceptional that even the former president of Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aimé, remarked that it came remarkably close to surpassing Nintendo in its own genre.

Although there’s no news about a sequel yet, Team Asobi continues to release regular free content updates. In fact, they just released another update today.
