Sources say Sony Pictures Entertainment is planning to cut several hundred jobs over the next few months across its television, film, and corporate departments. While the exact number isn’t known, even a small percentage of its 12,000 employees would mean a significant reduction in staff. This news follows Sony’s recent decision to close the visual effects studio Pixomondo, which likely is part of the same larger restructuring. Pixomondo has worked on popular projects like the upcoming third season of House of the Dragon, and its closure leaves many of its employees, along with hundreds of others at Sony, facing job insecurity.
A recent internal email from Sony Pictures CEO Ravi Ahuja, obtained by Variety, announced layoffs as the company shifts its focus. The email explained that some positions are being eliminated while others are being strengthened, though specific priorities weren’t detailed. However, Sony’s actions since Ahuja became CEO in early 2026 suggest where the company is headed. With the recent $457 million acquisition of the Peanuts brand, Sony will likely prioritize projects based on that intellectual property. Variety also reports that the company plans to create more TV series based on PlayStation games and expand popular franchises like The Boys and Spider-Man.
Sony has been successfully adapting its popular video games into TV shows and movies. While the Uncharted film had a mixed reception, it performed well at the box office, and the HBO series based on The Last of Us has been a major success. Production has now begun on a God of War adaptation, and if that goes well, we could see more of Sony’s games turned into shows or movies. However, funding these adaptations means Sony Pictures may need to reduce staff in other areas of the company.

Over the last seven years, around 60% of the game studios Sony has acquired – including Bluepoint Games, Insomniac, and Bungie – have either had layoffs or been shut down.
