Highlights
- Sony is seemingly testing a new feature on PlayStation Store for users to write game reviews, potentially expanding the rating system.
- PlayStation Store already shows average ratings of games, but lacks detailed information.
As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation at the prospect of PlayStation introducing user-generated written reviews to their storefront. Having spent countless hours on Steam, I’ve grown accustomed to reading and writing detailed reviews that provide nuanced insights into games, helping me make informed decisions about my purchases.
On the PlayStation Store, Sony appears to be experimenting with a new functionality that enables users to pen written reviews for games they’ve already played on the platform, expanding upon the existing rating system. As of now, it is undetermined whether this feature will continue to be integrated in the shopping experience on the PlayStation 5; however, some gamers have claimed to have received emails encouraging them to review their games.
Over the last few years, PlayStation has undergone significant transformations, with Sony focusing more on a digital-oriented gaming platform, placing great importance on the enhanced PlayStation Plus subscription and its numerous benefits. Although most games available online for the PS5 display an average rating of five stars, these ratings merely offer a numerical score without providing insight into the game’s true nature.
As a gamer, I recently stumbled upon a post on Reddit by cusman78 who shared an image of an invitation to write a review for Helldivers 2 on the PS5. It seems Sony is recruiting players like us to test this feature, hinting at future official rollouts. Interestingly, other gamers also reported receiving similar emails, requesting their feedback on various PS5 games, particularly newer ones such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
PlayStation Fan Receives an Email Revealing New PS Store Feature
It’s been observed that certain players can’t leave reviews for games they purchased physically, leading to the assumption that invitations to write game reviews might be given based on the amount of time spent playing rather than the type of game format (physical or digital). Interestingly, this phenomenon doesn’t seem to be limited to games exclusively available on Sony’s PS Store or Steam, as one user even reported receiving an invitation to review the PS5 edition of Fortnite, a game not typically associated with physical copies.
Since Steam enables users to write game reviews, a function that can sometimes be misused (like the recent instance of Helldivers 2 review-bombing), Sony might be considering adjustments to better align its digital marketplace with this model. At present, the feature is invite-only from Sony, meaning it hasn’t been widely rolled out across all platforms, although speculation suggests that they could be testing it for a future launch.
Generally, there’s a lot of enthusiasm among fans about this new feature, as they often rely on written reviews to make informed choices about their game purchases on Steam. However, it remains unclear when or if this written review feature will be fully rolled out, or if it will also apply to disc-based games. Fans will simply have to stay updated for any announcements from Sony in the future.
