Sony Should Bring Back Bloodborne’s Spirit

Following years of fans eagerly demanding a sequel, spin-off, or remastered version of the popular game “Bloodborne“, Nintendo has announced their collaboration with FromSoftware on a new title called “The Duskbloods“. This upcoming game bears a striking resemblance to the 2015 Lovecraftian horror masterpiece, but it’s essential to note that “The Duskbloods” isn’t a traditional sequel to “Bloodborne“, but rather a spiritual successor, providing an equally satisfying experience for many gamers.

Concurrently, the game titled “The Duskbloods” poses an intriguing query: why hasn’t there been a sequel or spin-off for Bloodborne yet? Following the surge of popularity it achieved alongside the first two Dark Souls games, FromSoftware utilized Bloodborne to branch away from their traditional high-fantasy approach, with remarkable success. Remarkably, this game remains exclusive to the PS4, despite numerous requests for a PC version or next-gen update, making the absence of a follow-up all the more puzzling. This confusion is heightened by Elden Ring’s triumph, which cemented FromSoftware as one of the most revered and lucrative AAA developers in today’s market. Given that The Duskbloods is on its way, Sony may want to reconsider their stance on leaving Bloodborne behind.

Sony Should Be Doing Everything Possible To Make ‘Bloodborne 2’ Happen

Sony’s Neglect of Bloodborne Is Becoming More Inexplicable

It’s uncertain whether we’ll ever learn the exact reason why “Bloodborne” hasn’t seen any new development since its initial release in 2015, but many fans have theories. A plausible guess is that FromSoftware might not be keen on creating another console-exclusive game, given that such a title would likely make less profit compared to multiplatform releases like “Elden Ring.” Another possibility could be that FromSoftware has chosen to move away from the Gothic horror setting of “Bloodborne,” as suggested by their focus on high-fantasy titles like “Dark Souls 3” and “Elden Ring” instead.

As a die-hard fan, I must admit that both theories I previously held about FromSoftware’s stance on console exclusives have been shaken up by the announcement of The Duskbloods. Contrary to my beliefs, it seems that FromSoftware isn’t entirely against console exclusivity, as this intriguing game is only planned for a Switch 2 release.

The dark Gothic setting and steampunk elements hint at a continuation of the artistic style we saw in Bloodborne, which implies that FromSoftware might not have fully moved away from the world of Bloodborne just yet. However, given how perfectly The Duskbloods seems to fit into the PS5’s capabilities, it’s tempting to think that its appearance on the Switch 2 could be seen as Nintendo stepping in to help fill the void left by Sony.

It would be more fitting for The Duskbloods’ multiplayer aspects to be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox, or PC, since these systems are predominantly used for multiplayer games and align better with the gaming preferences of FromSoftware’s primary audience.

Sony’s Stab at Bloodborne 2 Doesn’t Need To Literally Be ‘Bloodborne 2’

Another explanation for why a Bloodborne follow-up hasn’t materialized yet could be that the president and main designer of FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki, expresses a lack of interest in sequels. Given that fans of FromSoftware might refuse to support a Bloodborne 2 if it wasn’t created by FromSoftware themselves, this apparent reluctance on FromSoftware’s part may have hindered the progression of the Bloodborne intellectual property.

In essence, it’s clear that FromSoftware is receptive to creating a game similar to Bloodborne, as demonstrated by The Duskbloods and Elden Ring Nightreign. Given the high demand for more Bloodborne content, Sony could capitalize on this market by releasing Bloodborne-inspired spin-offs or spiritual successors, especially considering that many Bloodborne fans are already part of Sony’s user base. A FromSoftware exclusive for the PS5, akin to The Duskbloods, would be beneficial for both companies. If The Duskbloods performs well on the Switch 2, it would make strategic sense for Sony to capitalize on this opportunity by collaborating with FromSoftware again. While a direct Bloodborne sequel might not materialize, Sony should at least consider something in the same vein.
