Sony Wanted Crimson Desert As PS5 Exclusive, But Pearl Abyss Declined

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say, the news about Crimson Desert being available across multiple platforms, including PS5, Xbox, and PC, is music to my ears! While it’s always exciting to have exclusive titles, I’ve learned that variety is the spice of gaming life.

Despite initial efforts by Sony to make Crimson Desert exclusive to PlayStation 5 (PS5), it has been confirmed that the game will not be a console exclusive. This decision wasn’t due to any lack of effort on Sony’s part, but rather the developer, Pearl Abyss, decided against exclusivity following discussions at an investor meeting in September.

Under normal circumstances, Sony might have asked Pearl Abyss to delay the release of Crimson Desert on Xbox for a specific duration, as is common with many agreements. However, Pearl Abyss opted to publish the game independently, stating that they believed it would be significantly more profitable to do so themselves.

Beyond aiming to make Crimson Desert playable only on PS5, Sony is said to have given the game high compliments overall. Its narrative and ambiance were likened to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima.

Although nothing definitive has been announced, it’s highly likely that the game will debut on PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC at its launch. A specific release date hasn’t been set yet, but we can anticipate the game to drop in the second quarter of 2025. Additional details are expected to be unveiled within the coming months.
