Sony’s Spiderverse Exists Just To Hurt The MCU

Sony's Spiderverse Exists Just To Hurt The MCU

Key Takeaways

  • Sony is not handling beloved comic book characters well.
  • MCU’s eagerness for Venom’s inclusion underlines Sony’s reluctance.
  • Kraven could change Sony’s disjointed movie strategy, or it could prove its motive.

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I can’t help but feel disheartened by Sony’s handling of some of my favorite characters. The MCU has set a high bar for superhero movies, and it’s frustrating to see beloved characters like Venom and Morbius being treated as cash cows rather than the complex, nuanced characters they deserve to be.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) gears up for its next phase, a significant obstacle seems to be hindering it from reaching its full potential, according to many who follow comic book films. Some believe this hurdle is preventing Kevin Feige and his team from fully utilizing the Marvel license. The issue at hand is whether Sony’s Cinematic Universe is deliberately impeding the MCU or if it’s merely an unfortunate coincidence. Essentially, is Sony producing subpar movies intentionally to tarnish the reputations of characters such as Morbius and pollute the waters?

Given that Venom: The Last Dance, now playing in cinemas, has faced both financial and critical struggles, it raises an intriguing question. After all, one might wonder why Sony, a studio known for its high-profile actors like Tom Hardy, would invest in a trilogy only to have the films receive less than favorable reviews. It’s understandable if one film isn’t up to par, but when all three are perceived as nothing more than a money-making scheme, it becomes problematic, especially when these cash grabs don’t yield substantial profits.

Sony Is Not A Good Steward Of Some Very Good Characters

It’s never a good sign that legitimate questions over the motives of a company the size of Sony exist. It’s also never a good sign when a company rolls out one critical failure after another but doesn’t seem to be changing its strategy. That might be the biggest clue of them all. It’s not just the Venom trilogy that points to something odd happening here. Mobius was even worse at the box office. And it was much, much worse when it came to reviews. And yet, Sony mistook a meme making fun of just how bad the flick was for popularity.

It’s still utterly amazing that “it’s Morbin’ time” became so popular on Twitter that Sony believed people were so excited to see Morbius again that it re-released the bomb back into the box offices. That certainly seems to be a clue that the point of Sony’s Cinematic Universe is all about making as much money as possible. But that doesn’t have to be its only motivation. Knowing that every time it releases a movie like Venom: The Last Dance, or Morbius, or Kraven, or Madame Web, it holds the license for just a bit longer has been a thorn in the side of the MCU for years.

The MCU Would Love A Crack At Venom Especially

With Tom Holland’s Spider-Man gaining renewed fame, it’s clear that Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and his team would be thrilled to introduce the Venom symbiote into the MCU. So far, there have been many discussions about this possibility, but no concrete results. Each film has subtly suggested that the next installment could be the one where it happens, increasing anticipation as we wait for them to finally execute their plan.

Sony is withholding approval for the merger, which doesn’t bring any benefits since they’re not eager to let this happen. Although money is a significant factor, it seems like resentment is playing a more prominent role. Despite their massive size, these corporations are run by individuals with big egos. These Sony executives are envious of Marvel’s success in creating their own cinematic universe and feel slighted because they can’t achieve the same level. The advantage for Sony in not allowing Marvel to use characters like Venom is that some fans of the MCU might not grasp why Feige and his team can’t find a way to make it work. So, while Sony takes most of the blame, there’s a bit of spillover involved as well.

Kraven Could Be The Answer

After Kraven: The Hunter, it’s uncertain if Sony will continue producing films. Will they persist in releasing mediocre films in an attempt to snatch a small piece of the superhero movie market? Or will they release more movies to ensure that some of Spider-Man’s most renowned villains don’t make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?

Currently, no new film featuring Knull, the antagonist introduced in Venom: The Last Dance, has been officially announced to be in production. However, there are rumors suggesting his return somewhere else. This situation might lead some to wonder if Sony will eventually surrender control to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), or if it will continue causing trouble instead. The direction Sony takes with its future plans and how it executes them will give a strong indication to moviegoers about why these decisions are being made. However, it seems like Sony’s actions in this situation could be more about inflicting harm on Marvel than working collaboratively with them.
