Key Takeaways
- Multiple crucial Bleach characters never revealed their Bankai, sparking fan speculation about their abilities.
- Yumichika, Ukitake, Omaeda, Rangiku, Isshin, Love, Yoruichi, and Aizen all kept their Bankai hidden in the series.
- Consumed by fan theories, Aizen’s potential Bankai remains the most anticipated, rumored to be as powerful as controlling time and space.
As a long-time follower of Bleach and its captivating universe, I find myself constantly intrigued by the mysterious nature of some characters’ Zanpakutos. Among these enigmatic blades, none stirs the imagination quite like Sosuke Aizen’s.
In the anime Bleach, many prominent Soul Reapers exhibit their ultimate move, known as Bankai, during a significant battle. However, not all characters got the opportunity to declare this powerful ability throughout the series. Acquiring Bankai can be challenging and demanding, as demonstrated in the final story arc. It appears that most Soul Reapers, whether captains or lieutenants, have one they are ready to use against the Quincy army.
From my gaming perspective, there are certain Soul Reapers in Bleach whose Bankai abilities still remain shrouded in mystery, leaving fans like me in suspense about their hidden powers and the reasons behind their restraint.
8. Yumichika Ayasegawa
Yumichika’s Bankai Would Presumably Be Based Around His Ignorant Personality
- First Appearance: Episode 24
Unlike comrade Ikkaku from Squad 11, who uses his Bankai quite early in the series, Yumichika never gets to showcase the full potential of his Zanpakuto’s Bankai, Rur’iro Kujaku. Yet, he frequently employs his Shikai, a skill that enables his sword to assimilate another’s Spiritual Power. This ability alone is potent, making one ponder what catastrophic impact his Bankai might inflict.
Some speculate that, given Yumichika’s overconfident and dismissive nature towards his adversaries, his Bankai might strip an opponent of their resolve to keep fighting, effectively making them subservient to his control. However, it’s also plausible that Yumichika hadn’t mastered his Bankai in time for the decisive battle against the Quincy. If he had learned it, it seems likely he would have utilized it earlier to bolster their defenses against the new invading forces.
7. Jushiro Ukitake
Ukitake Doesn’t Show His Bankai In The Series, But There Are Hints It May Appear In Future Arcs
- First Appearance: Episode 40
In the narrative of Bleach, Ukitake doesn’t often participate in battles, and when the climactic war comes, he heroically forfeits his life energy to assume the role of the Soul King instead. Regrettably, there was no opportunity for him to employ his Bankai during this time. As a captain, it’s evident that Ukitake possesses a Bankai, but due to a long-standing lung disease, the use of it might be too taxing on his body.
Indirectly hinting at a possible return, the one-time Hell arc chapter published by Kubo some years ago suggests that this captain might reappear in the future. This is suggested by the depiction of his sword extending from the gates of Hell to draw Szayelaporo back in. Whether it was a foreshadowing of his Bankai or just a fun Easter egg for fans, we’ll have to wait and see.
6. Marechiyo Omaeda
It Could Be The Case That A Character As Clumsy As Omaeda Would Struggle To Control A Bankai
- First Appearance: Episode 30
Some might argue that Omaeda never obtains a Bankai because he’s portrayed as too humorous or serving as comic relief in most scenes. However, it’s important to consider that this character advanced to the rank of lieutenant and possesses an impressive Shikai, which transforms his sword into a large spiked ball, suggesting that he might indeed be capable of wielding a Bankai.
Despite Omaeda’s Bankai not being displayed, it seems reasonable to assume that it would revolve around heavy weaponry, given his Shikai ability as a clue. It might involve a large spiked mace or even a cannon-like device, mirroring his captain Soi Fon’s style. Such an equipment could have greatly enhanced Omaeda’s combat effectiveness during the final war.
5. Rangiku Matsumoto
There Have Been Several Theories As To Why Hitsugaya’s Lieutenant Never Uses Her Bankai
- First Appearance: Episode 30
Among all the lieutenants in the series, I find myself frequently seeing Rangiku, which is a treat for fans like me because we get to delve deeper into her character, especially her intricate dynamics with Gin and her captain Hitsugaya. However, one aspect that remains a puzzle is her Bankai. It’s possible that due to Aizen extracting part of her soul, this could be the reason why she can’t activate her Bankai like other Soul Reapers do.
An alternate interpretation could be that perhaps Rangiku’s sword, Haineko, might refuse or be incapable of granting its Bankai to Rangiku, as suggested by the Zanpakuto Rebellion filler arc. Given that Rangiku often sustains serious injuries in her battles, it’s possible that using a Bankai could have caused excessive damage to her body. Moreover, it seems rather improbable that she possesses a Bankai at all, considering the subtle hints in the storyline.
4. Isshin Kurosaki
Isshin’s Bankai Is Said To Inflict Major Damage On The User, But How Powerful Could It Really Be?
- First Appearance: Episode 1
In a heart-wrenching flashback about my dad, Isshin’s past with Ichigo’s mom was revealed. During this moment, Aizen spoke up about Isshin’s Bankai, calling it so over-the-top powerful that using it in less-than-optimal condition could cause massive harm to his own body. This right there confirms that my old man possesses a Bankai, even though he seldom appears in the story and often takes heavy hits in every fight, leaving him little opportunity to unleash its power.
Given that Isshin’s Zanpakuto is fire-based, it’s likely his Bankai would center around releasing scorching flames capable of burning anything in its vicinity, much like the opposite of Rukia’s ice-centric Bankai. However, another possibility could be a fire equivalent to Hitsugaya’s Bankai, where instead of summoning an ice dragon, Isshin might summon the power of a flame Phoenix or another mythical fiery creature to rain down fireballs upon his foes.
3. Love Aikawa
A Former Captain Who Doesn’t Get Quite Enough Screen Time To Earn A Flashy Bankai Scene
- First Appearance: Episode 123
It might seem astonishing to know that Love, who initially meets Ichigo as a member of the Vizoreds, was once a captain before being expelled by Yamamoto. This may surprise you because Love doesn’t have many significant moments throughout the series, yet it appears quite likely that he possesses a Bankai, given his fellow Vizored, Shinji, has recently displayed his own Bankai in the final arc of the anime.
In the Battle of False Karakura Town arc, Love reveals his Shikai, causing his Zanpakuto to substantially increase in size and become studded with spikes that can devastate anything they touch. It’s fascinating to think about what his Bankai could do, possibly making it even larger and more robust, and perhaps enabling the sword’s embedded spikes to be launched for added impact.
2. Yoruichi Shihouin
Yoruichi Definitely Had A Bankai Before Abandoning Her Zanpakuto
- First Appearance: Episode 15
Most Soul Reapers who decline to utilize their Bankai typically don’t offer an explanation, but Yoruichi’s case is different. She chose not to use her Bankai because she gave up her Zanpakuto, presumably when she left the Soul Society permanently. To activate a Soul Reaper’s Bankai, they must forge a deep connection with their sword and master its power to the extent that they can trigger its ultimate ability.
As a former captain, it’s highly likely that Yoruchi had access to a Bankai, but its exact nature is unknown. Given her swift and elusive combat style, it might involve aspects of invisibility or illusion creation, allowing her to move unseen or create deceiving images as she fights.
1. Sosuke Aizen
Aizen Saying The Word “Bankai” Would Be A Dream Come True For Every Bleach Fan
- First Appearance: Episode 23
Among all Bankais in the series, Sosuke Aizen is the one most often speculated about, as he never uses or discloses his Bankai despite frequently employing his Shikai throughout the show. Given Aizen’s immense Spiritual Pressure, exceptional intellect, and mastery over his Zanpakuto, it seems highly probable that he does possess a Bankai. However, many believe that its power might be so great that using it could endanger even the user’s life.
Because his Shikai can manipulate his enemies’ perceptions by showing them whatever Aizen desires, it seems reasonable to assume that his Bankai would amplify this ability significantly. Perhaps it could allow Aizen to control time and space completely or even alter the storyline itself, as if he were author Tite Kubo. There have been rumors among fans for some time now that they might witness Aizen’s Bankai in action during the final arc of the TYBW anime. If Aizen were to invoke his Bankai, it would undoubtedly cause an internet frenzy within seconds.
