Space Marine 2: How To Play As & Customize Chaos Space Marines

As a veteran Warhammer 40k enthusiast with countless hours spent in the grim darkness of the far future, I must say that the prospect of playing as Chaos Space Marines in Space Marine 2’s Eternal War mode has me both excited and a tad frustrated.

In the Eternal War gameplay of Space Marine 2, there are various chapters of Chaotic Space Marines available for players to select and control. Despite not being able to play as the Thousand Sons who appear in certain missions of the main storyline, players do enjoy a degree of autonomy when choosing to engage with the Chaos Space Marines.

While there is a ton of creativity when building your loyalist Space Marine, the customization with Chaos Space Marines is more limited. Despite these limitations, players can still find fun in changing some aspects of their Chaos Space Marines when trying to beat out the forces of the Emperor in PVP.

How To Play As Chaos Space Marines In Space Marine 2

In the Eternal War game mode of ‘Space Marine 2’, there are just six different chapters of Chaos Space Marines that players can select.

  • Alpha Legion
  • Black Legion
  • Death Guard
  • Night Lords
  • World Eaters
  • Iron Warriors

To become a Chaos Space Marine when a new game of Eternal War begins, it’s essentially a matter of chance. During the loading of the map, one among the players will be assigned either as Loyalist or Heretic at random. Although a team roster is displayed before the game commences, it only shows teams and doesn’t reveal who belongs to which faction.

Each game presents an equal opportunity for success, implying that remaining in the same room doesn’t enhance your chances, since every game carries a 50% chance. Apart from their visual differences like armor and weapon designs, Heretics and Loyalists play identically, and the only variations are cosmetic.

In each round of Eternal War, you’re limited to playing as Chaos Space Marines. However, after some time on the Barge, you’ll reappear as a Loyalist.

How To Customize Chaos Space Marines In Space Marine 2

For Chaos Space Marines, the customization options are significantly fewer compared to Loyalists. Unlike Loyalists who can switch between various classes, each Chaos Chapter is associated with a particular class, meaning you must play as that specific class if you wish to don the armor of your chosen Chapter in the game.

  • Alpha Legion – Sniper
  • Black Legion – Tactical
  • Death Guard – Bulwark
  • Night Lords – Assault
  • World Eaters – Vanguard
  • Iron Warriors – Heavy

In this game, while each Chaos Chapter maintains its unique armor style and appearance based on its class, you have the freedom to alter the color scheme of your Chaos Chapter to match another Chapter’s colors. This is similar to how you personalize your Loyalist Space Marine. To modify the colors and tailor your Chaos Space Marine, pick the Chapter class you wish to customize and choose the “Edit Armor” option. On the right side of the screen, you will find the Heretic Astartes button. Clicking this button switches to the specific Chaos Space Marine of that chosen class, allowing you to adjust the color scheme to your preferred choice.
