Spice & Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Season 2 Confirmed

Spice & Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Season 2 Confirmed

As a seasoned gamer and anime enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of Spice & Wolf’s second season has brought a smile to my face wider than Holo’s when she spots a tasty lamb stew. The original series, which I first watched back in 2008, was a breath of fresh air in the anime world, with its unique blend of adventure, humor, and intrigue.

On Tuesday, following the broadcast of the last episode number 25 of the series titled “Spice & Wolf: Merchant and the Wise Wolf“, the show’s official website made an announcement that another season is being planned. Alongside this news, a fresh visual was unveiled showing a joyful Holo gripping Kraft Lawrence’s hand as she looks back at him, guiding him towards a picturesque meadow in the distance.

15 years after the initial airing of the original anime, we have a new version, which is a retelling based on the light novel by Isuna Hasekura and Jū Ayakura. Unlike the previous 25-episode anime (excluding OVAs), this first season shares the same length. This suggests that the story of the merchant encountering the wise wolf will adapt more from the original light novel compared to the original adaptation.

About Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

The Return of a Classic

Spice & Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf Season 2 Confirmed

The storyline of Spice & Wolf revolves around a skilled merchant named Kraft Lawrence, who has grown accustomed to his solitary life as a traveling merchant. However, an extraordinary event occurs when he finds a young woman with wolf-like features, Holo, the goddess of the harvest, asleep in his cart one evening. In her past, she had been responsible for overseeing harvests in rural areas, but this routine had become monotonous. She proposes a deal to Lawrence: she will accompany him on his travels and share her knowledge to boost his earnings, in return.

For any shrewd entrepreneur, this appears to be an excellent bargain. However, Lawrence discovers that Holo’s erratic behavior makes her both profitable and problematic. The original light novel Spice & Wolf by Isuna Hasekura, beautifully illustrated by Jū Ayakura, was first published under ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint in February 2006, with a total of 24 volumes. Since September 2016, a spin-off titled Wolf and Parchment has been released.

The second season of “Spice & Wolf” started airing in April, concluding on September 24 after running for two successive seasons. It was available to stream on Crunchyroll while it aired, and an English dubbed version is now streaming as well. Unlike the 2008 anime, this new series revisits the original light novel plot rather than continuing from where it left off. The production studios were switched from Brain’s Base and Marvy Jack to Passione (known for “Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU”), and several members of the original cast and crew returned, including the original anime director who took on the role of chief director, and Hijiri Sanpei, the director of “Spice & Wolf II”, serving as the director for this new series titled “merchant meets the wise wolf”.

In the show, Kevin Penkin provided the music, having previously composed for “Tower of God” and “Made in the Abyss”. The voice actors from before are returning – Jun Fukuyama as Kraft Lawrence, Ami Koshimizu as Holo, and Mai Nakahara who played Nola in the original series is now voicing Norah Arendt. Unfortunately, we don’t know yet when the second season will be released.

You can stream both versions of “Spice & Wolf” (originally titled “Ookami to Koushinryou”) and “The Merchant and the Wise Wolf” on Crunchyroll. Enjoy!
