The fourth installment of Spider-Man, titled Spider-Man 4, is scheduled for release on July 24, 2026. However, Marvel Studios has been facing challenges in getting this movie off the ground. Destin Daniel Cretton is slated to direct, but the production issues have hindered that so far. With high expectations for Spider-Man 4 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and given its much-anticipated status after the success of the previous three films, there’s increased pressure on Marvel to deliver a captivating storyline.
One of the major hurdles that “Spider-Man 4” is currently grappling with is its script, as it remains unfinished. Previously, it was announced that an initial draft had been scrapped, leaving some uncertainty about whether the production will be expedited or if complications may arise during development. It’s not yet clear what issues arose in the first script, but recent revelations have shed light on some aspects of Marvel’s plans for “Spider-Man 4”.
Based on information from industry expert Daniel Richtman, Marvel’s team is currently revising the movie script following Kevin Feige’s rejection of the initial one. Originally, the script included Scorpion and Shocker, but this version has now been abandoned. It remains to be seen which elements from this discarded script will be incorporated into the next draft.
In a potential twist for Spider-Man fans, Shocker and Scorpion – two iconic antagonists from Spider-Man’s history – might take center stage in an upcoming film. While they’ve made appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Spider-Man before, most notably in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” their roles were somewhat limited as they served primarily as henchmen for other villains like Vulture and Shocker being his right-hand man. Some viewers might not remember them because of these supporting roles. However, Scorpion made a brief return in the film’s end credits, hinting at the formation of the Sinister Six. Although Marvel never developed this plotline further, it’s possible that elements from an abandoned script could resurrect this idea.
It’s evident that these characters are still under consideration by the Marvel creative team since they appear in the script. Neither character has been overlooked or forgotten about. Although their roles in Spider-Man 4 might not have been as main villains, many fans hope to see them reappear at some point. Their stories were left unfinished in their previous appearances, but reintroducing them enriches the overall narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man world. This could strengthen the notion that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man film will be a more realistic, street-level movie. After the grandiose events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are eager to delve into a more subdued narrative. This could pave the way for other heroes like Daredevil or The Punisher to enter the MCU, thereby expanding and enriching the franchise even more.
Initially conceived under a different script, it’s clear that the forthcoming Spider-Man film will undergo several alterations. As production progresses, significant modifications to the plot might occur, potentially leading to the elimination of characters like Shocker and Scorpion from the final cut. Nevertheless, the intriguing notion of these villains making an appearance in some form is something I’m eagerly anticipating, whether that materializes in Spider-Man 4 or at a later phase in the series.
