Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Update! But Not The One You Want

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can say that the news about the Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has me both excited and puzzled. On one hand, I’m thrilled to see the original creative team of Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson returning to direct the conclusive installment. Their involvement since the beginning of this incredible journey adds a sense of continuity that is rare in modern cinema.

Originally set for a release on March 29th, 2024, the movie “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” was pushed back with no specific date announced. However, after nine months, there’s some exciting news to share about it.

No, it’s not a release date. It’s the directing team.

Each film in the Spider-Verse series has been a combined creative endeavor. Into the Spider-Verse was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, while Across the Spider-Verse was helmed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thomson.

The exclusive report indicates that Sony Animation has chosen Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson to direct ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’.

A Full-Circle Creative Team

Bob and Justin released a statement:

From day one, it’s been an incredible honor to be involved in Miles’ story, and shaping the final chapter of his journey is incredibly thrilling. The passion and dedication put into every moment of this project has been truly awe-inspiring. We believe we’ve created a deeply fulfilling conclusion, and we can hardly wait for fans to immerse themselves in it – we’re giving it our all!

It’s quite fitting that the directors from the initial and sequel films are joining together for the third and final installment. Interestingly enough, both Persichetti and Thompson have been involved since the very start. Back when Persichetti was directing, Thompson was responsible for production design. Then, when Thompson took up director’s duties, Perscichetti served as executive producer. Their long-standing collaboration should provide a strong foundation for their future work together.

The team responsible for driving the entire trilogy, the creative pair Phil Lord and Chris Miller (authors of Beyond the Spider-Verse) expressed their thoughts as follows:

The distinctive touch of Bob and Justin can be found throughout these films, as their unwavering dedication to Miles’ journey is evident in every scene of his final adventure. It’s a joy to team up with visionary creators like Bob and Justin, who not only have daring ideas but also execute them brilliantly. We are excited to collaborate with them again, crafting an ending to this tale that is both beautiful and satisfying.

Although it’s intriguing, what’s absent from the announcement is any hint about when we might expect a launch – whether it’s a specific date, a timeframe, or even an estimated year.

Why Fans Are Still Waiting For a Release Date

The animated movie “Into the Spider-Verse” premiered in 2018. Fans had to wait until 2023 for “Across the Spider-Verse”. However, their anticipation was fueled when Sony Animation scheduled the third movie, titled “Beyond”, for release on March 29, 2024. This suggested that both movies were likely developed simultaneously, offering an explanation for the five-year gap between the first and second installments.

Approximately a year past, during an exposé published by Vulture regarding the work environment of artists involved in the Spider-Verse movie series, someone identified merely as Stephen, spoke up about it.

It’s been confirmed that “Beyond the Spider-Verse” will hit the screens in March of the upcoming year. Some people have speculated that they might have been working on it concurrently, but given the current state of things, it seems unlikely. While there has been progress made in pre-production, the production side for the third movie has only involved early explorations and tests that were done prior to its division into two parts. The team has been heavily invested in completing “Across the Spider-Verse” and are just about finishing up. Now, it seems they have to turn their attention to the other one.

Immediately afterwards, during an interview with ComicBook.com, Lord stated they would devote the time needed to make “Beyond the Spider-Verse” exceptional. Meanwhile, Miller emphasized, “We will not compromise on a release date that doesn’t suit.

We’re going to sit tight and observe which one will appear sooner: either “Beyond the Spider-Verse” or George R.R. Martin’s “The Winds of Winter”.
