Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Cast Would Be a Dream Come True for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3

Frequently, news or whispers about “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start” emerge these days, and one of the first confirmed characters to be included was The Punisher, played by Frank Castle. It’s understandable for contemporary Marvel enthusiasts to think that Daredevil and The Punisher have a more complex or vibrant history together compared to Spider-Man and The Punisher, given their morally ambiguous portrayals in Netflix’s “Daredevil” and “Punisher” shows, as well as the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Reborn.” However, “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start” serves as a charming reminder that the relationship between Peter Parker and Frank Castle goes back quite a ways.

Punisher’s first appearance was in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974).

Currently, Marvel’s Spider-Man is focusing on solo Spider-Man stories, introducing characters like Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and hinting at Cindy Moon (Silk) playing a significant role in Spider-Man 3. However, if Spider-Man 3 decides to have its share of multiple characters, The Punisher could make an exciting addition as a side character, antagonist, or brief appearance. This possibility is fueled by the growing anticipation surrounding Frank Castle, who will appear in next summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is Itching to Feature a Legitimate Superhero Cameo

In contrast to numerous comic book adaptations where the main character is the only superhero in their universe, Marvel’s Spider-Man walks a peculiar path. It hints at a world shared with other Marvel icons, yet these characters seem to coexist but remain unseen in this world. For instance, various landmarks connected to Marvel characters appear in the open-world New York City of Marvel’s Spider-Man, implying their existence, but they are not physically present.

The most similar example from Insomniac so far is the Wong and Doctor Strange reference in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game. This part of the game features an impressive, magical scene where Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat, skillfully uses the Wand of Watoomb that she has stolen from the New York City Sanctum Sanctorum, demonstrating teleportation magic.

As the story draws to a close, Miles Morales receives a message from Wong. While it might feel underwhelming if the Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series didn’t include any genuine appearances of characters from the Marvel universe after all the hints dropped about them, on the other hand, it would be praiseworthy if the series stuck to its unique Spider-People cast and never felt compelled to incorporate such cameos on a larger scale.

Spider-Man and Punisher are Like Peanut Butter and Mayonnaise, But Somehow It Works

As a diehard gamer and ardent fan of the Marvel universe, it’d be nothing short of epic to see The Punisher in action, either playable or just making an appearance, within the realm of “Marvel’s Spider-Man” game. After all, his debut was graced by the pages of a Spidey comic book, and that connection makes him a natural fit for this gaming scenario. In fact, some of The Punisher’s most memorable video game stints, where Spidey is also part of the ensemble, have been nothing short of thrilling!

  • An NPC in NeverSoft’s Spider-Man; this is arguably Punisher’s best and most iconic video game appearance, especially when he’s seen playing cards with Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Captain America in one of Spider-Man’s hilarious final cutscenes.
  • An explicit reference in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 concerning which side of the Superhuman Registration Act he should’ve been recruited into.
  • An Easter egg of his presumed death in Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects.
  • A playable character alongside Spider-Man in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, having debuted in the Marvel Knights: Curse of the Vampire DLC.
  • A playable character alongside Spider-Man in Marvel Rivals’ roster.

The upcoming game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, could introduce an exciting dynamic by including The Punisher character. This might occur in standalone DLC chapters similar to those given to Black Cat, or perhaps as a formidable adversary for players to face off against, similar to the challenging Silver Sable. However, it’s worth noting that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3’s story may already be brimming with elements borrowed from its predecessors, reducing the chances of an unforeseen superhero appearance in the narrative.
