What does an old proverb say? If you’ve got one, you may have a multitude. This could be a problem that Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man might encounter with heroes, particularly Spider-heroes, before even starting season 2. Season one introduced characters such as Nico Minoru, the sorceress best friend, Wave, the water-master crush, and Brawn, the whiz kid resembling the Hulk, to name a few, in addition to Daredevil and nearly half of the Avengers.

Watching Marvel comic book heroes unite on both pages and screens is one of the most exhilarating parts of being a comic book fan. However, ensemble teams aren’t always successful. An earlier Spider-Man series suffered from this issue. Having too many Spider-Men could lead to too many cooks spoiling the broth before viewers get a well-rounded Spider-Man. Team members are important, but Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man‘s authentic portrayal of the character is rushing into the realm of the Spider-Verse — without the in-depth origin story provided by the first Spider-Verse movie.

As a fan, I can’t help but admire Jeff Trammell, the brilliant mind behind “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”. He skillfully crafts stories that keep Spider-Man grounded in his urban environment, even with the presence of immense superhuman abilities and complex timelines. Although season one subtly introduced Silk, a lesser-known organic web-slinging Spider-Woman, Trammell confirmed that Gwen Stacy’s Ghost Spider will be joining the team for season 2. However, unlike in movies where multiple heroes work well together, the series struggled to distinguish individual characters when everyone seemed to embody a similar heroic figure. This approach worked wonders on the big screen, but it didn’t resonate as effectively on the small one.

Too Many Spiders To Feed

Due to Jeff Trammell, Spider-Man will now have a fantastic TV show to star in, which is a relief after Marvel’s subpar 2017 Spider-Man series on Disney XD that was criticized for its excessive focus on alternate Spider-People and poor animation. Critics also had issues with the animation quality of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. In this show, Peter becomes Spider-Man by the end of the first season. Over time, Peter learns to trust himself as the hero he’s meant to be. However, in this narrative, the audience doesn’t see Spider-Man’s iconic suit until the last two episodes, and neither episode showcases a battle where Spider-Man emerges victorious on his own.

During the same span, an assortment of superbeings, some heroic and others villainous, emerge during the pilot season. It’s thrilling to watch Spider-Man’s rogues gallery unfold, but it can be a bit underwhelming when other heroes pop up alongside him, particularly during his personal journey towards becoming the icon we know today. For me, Peter Parker, these newfound powers are still novel and I’m grappling with their implications. As a character, I’m still growing and evolving. It feels like everyone around me is also endowed with extraordinary abilities. While it’s inspiring to think that everyone could be powerful, it does sometimes make my own story feel less unique.

In “Into The Spider-Verse”, viewers are introduced to Miles Morales, a young man reflecting on his aspirations and destiny. He’s deeply invested in art, and seeks guidance from his somewhat shady Uncle Aaron, who shares the same passion and helps shape Miles’ character in contrast with his police officer father. After encountering a radioactive spider, Miles develops powers similar to those of Spider-Man. By this point, viewers feel they have a good understanding of Miles due to his well-established character. In “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, Peter gets bitten by a radioactive spider in the initial episode, following an invasion by Dr. Strange and a monstrous symbiote. However, the background and identity of this Peter remain unclear, as the storyline ends there.

Too Tangled A Web

It seems we might not need another origin story for Peter Parker right now, but it’s evident that this version of Peter is from a different timeline, and he’s someone we haven’t encountered in this series so far. Since the characters around him are new to us, it’s logical that their histories are being developed. However, it would be intriguing to see Peter face some personal challenges separate from his Spider-Man duties, as fans haven’t witnessed such struggles for more than two episodes in this series yet. Before Spider-Gwen takes over with actions we haven’t seen Spiderman perform, it could add depth to the story if Peter had a few unique hurdles to overcome.

Gwen Stacy plays a crucial role in shaping Spider-Man’s character. Within the comics, she serves as a romantic interest for Peter Parker and her heartbreaking narrative underscores the risks that his superhero lifestyle poses to those close to him, offering readers a relatable lesson about maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life. In the Edge of Spider-Verse comic book series, Gwen transforms into Ghost Spider; this Ghost Spider version is expected to be featured in Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Great Power, Great Respect

In the beginning, Trammell pitched his series to IndieWire as a “neighborhood Spider-Man” production. The series should continue to explore stories of neighborhood Spider-Man. Although it’s exciting to see Trammell’s take on Ghost Spider, it might have been more intriguing to introduce her later in season 2, perhaps following the audience’s experience with Peter Parker battling a villain without suffering excessive damage first. The show, titled Spider-Man from Around the Block, is well-written but its tempo has raised some doubts. So far, Trammell has earned our trust, so it might be premature to sound the alarm. However, getting acquainted with Peter Parker before his numerous friends seems most fitting.
