Spider-Man’s MCU TV Status Confrirmed, Sony Have The Rights

Summary

  • Spider-Man can’t appear in MCU TV shows due to Sony’s rights.
  • Marvel can use animated versions for 30-minute shows.
  • Fans won’t see Spider-Man in long-form MCU TV settings.

The collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony over Spider-Man’s rights has been intricate and prolonged, but it’s predominantly worked out well for Marvel Studios, allowing the beloved superhero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To date, there have been three Spider-Man films with a fourth underway, as Tom Holland’s adventures in the MCU carry on. However, unlike the movies, he hasn’t made an appearance in any of Marvel Studios’ Disney Plus series yet.

The influence of Marvel Studios’ TV division is increasing significantly compared to their films, as significant storylines like the multiverse saga in Loki unfold there. Fans eagerly anticipate what’s next for Daredevil: Born Again, with much speculation about a potential Spider-Man appearance within the series. Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that we’ll see Spider-Man leaping into Hell’s Kitchen when the show premieres on Disney Plus.

In a conversation with the Phase Hero podcast, Marvel Studios’ executive Brad Winderbaum discussed the possibility of Spider-Man appearing in upcoming MCU TV shows. He hinted, “I’m not entirely sure about the specific rules, but it seems Sony holds the rights for long-form television…he could potentially star in 30-minute animated episodes, I believe.

The reason why Spider-Man hasn’t made an appearance on any existing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows is because he can’t currently participate in any shows, regardless of Marvel Studios’ creative aspirations. It was announced that the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’ will take Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in a fresh, new direction creatively and introduce a new supporting cast. If Marvel had been able to incorporate Spider-Man into their TV shows, it could have served as a means to generate excitement and spark conversations about him. This strategy would have been particularly effective for ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, a series expected to be more violent and intense than its predecessors, serving as an ideal platform to introduce Spider-Man’s evolving character.

It’s clear why Marvel Studios debuted “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” on Disney Plus this year – they can create animated versions of MCU stars for half an hour. This animated series has resonated with fans, fulfilling their desire to see Spider-Man both on small screens and in cinemas. However, it seems that this is all the Spider-Man content we’ll get within the MCU on Disney Plus, despite his popularity. This was the arrangement they made with Sony, and while it doesn’t diminish Spider-Man’s image, it does prevent Marvel from exploring the character’s development in a lengthy format.

It’s disappointing that Marvel Studios can’t utilize Spider-Man for any roles in upcoming TV series, considering their plans to produce more long-term TV shows. Fans would undoubtedly delight in the prospect of a dedicated Spider-Man TV show or his appearance in another, but it appears that such an occurrence might be out of reach at this point.
