In a short span of time, Splatoon has emerged as one of Nintendo’s most unexpected yet enjoyable franchise creations. A decade after its initial release on the Wii U, Splatoon has solidified itself as one of Nintendo’s top multiplayer franchises, distinguished by its innovative paintball-inspired gameplay. The subsequent two installments on the Nintendo Switch have also been among the system’s best-selling games, and the series has even made an appearance in Nintendo’s crossover fighting franchise, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
As Splatoon approaches its tenth anniversary, boasting immense success, particularly on the Nintendo Switch, it’s clear that Nintendo intends to keep the Splatoon series thriving on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, it appears that Nintendo isn’t planning to release a brand new Splatoon game immediately for the Switch 2. Instead, they might benefit from taking their time and not rushing out the next Splatoon game on the Switch 2 just yet.
Splatoon 4 Could Play The Waiting Game On The Switch 2
Splatoon 3 Already Took Its Time To Release
The latest Nintendo Switch 2 presentation didn’t mention anything about a new Splatoon game, despite the fact that 2025 could have been an ideal release year since the franchise is marking its tenth anniversary this year. However, it appears that Nintendo won’t be launching the next Splatoon title within the new system’s initial phase, which might be upsetting for die-hard fans. But given their strategy, they can choose to wait and release the new entry at a later time.
It’s worth noting that Splatoon 3, released five years after its predecessor debuted early in the Switch’s lifecycle, didn’t seem to be impacted by the extended development period, despite part of it possibly being due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, when it was finally launched in 2022, it became the fastest-selling game in the series.
Splatoon 4 Has A Chance To Be A Major Innovation
In a relaxed and straightforward manner: Since Splatoon 4 is primarily a multiplayer game, it’s beneficial for Nintendo to spend more time on its development to introduce innovative features more thoroughly. Frequent content updates have been well-received by fans in the past, particularly through expansions. As such, fans have received an ample amount of content, so Nintendo can afford to take their time with this new release without worrying about a shortage of content.
It’s important to note that the following Splatoon sequels on the Switch have mostly adhered to the original formula. While there have been some minor adjustments and improvements, the series hasn’t made a significant leap in innovation with its second and third releases. Extending the development period for the fourth game could give Nintendo the chance to create a Splatoon title that truly distinguishes itself from its predecessors.
In simpler terms, the release of Splatoon 4 might benefit from a more extended production period. This would give Nintendo ample time to delve deeper into new and innovative ideas for the game.
Nintendo Could Give Splatoon 3 A Switch 2 Edition
To keep fans of the popular game “Splatoon” engaged while Nintendo works on the fourth installment, they might opt to launch a special “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” of “Splatoon 3” around the same time as the new console’s release. Although it has been confirmed that there will be no additional content for the original game, this updated version could help prolong its multiplayer experience slightly until Splatoon 4 is fully developed. Additionally, a Nintendo Switch 2 version of “Splatoon 3” could potentially offer mouse controls and the ability to play games at a smooth 120 frames per second.
It’s possible that Splatoon 4 might not be available on the Switch 2 right away, and if fans are eager for more of the game, they may need to content themselves with Splatoon 3 in the meantime. However, this delay could potentially lead to positive outcomes for Splatoon 4, as it provides Nintendo with more time to ensure that the franchise doesn’t become overly repetitive. Fingers crossed that the additional development time results in Splatoon 4 being an even better addition to the series than its predecessors.
