Split Fiction Devs Claim No Interference From EA As They Begin Work On Their Next Game

Summary

  • Split Fiction is a commercial and critical success with over 1 million copies sold in 48 hours.
  • Hazelight Studios is already working on their next game despite Split Fiction’s success.
  • EA respects Hazelight’s independence, allowing them to create without interference.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my excitement about the remarkable success of Split Fiction by Hazelight Studios. In merely two days, it managed to sell over a million copies, a feat that speaks volumes about its appeal. Moreover, it set a new standard on Steam for concurrent players for an Electronic Arts (EA) published game, demonstrating its widespread popularity and the captivating experience it offers to gamers like myself.

Rather than resting on their laurels after a successful release, the Hazelight development team is actively preparing for their upcoming project.

Hazelight Boss Jose Fares Confirms Studio Already Working On Next Game

In an appearance on the Friends Per Second podcast through Culture Crave, Jose Fares, founder of Hazelight Studios, shared that while Split Fiction has been warmly received and everyone involved seems extremely satisfied, he is completely engrossed and enthusiastic about the next project he’s working on.

It’s no surprise that Fares didn’t disclose details about Hazelight’s upcoming venture. Despite the resounding achievement of Split Fiction, the team doesn’t seem to be under any pressure with their next project. Instead, they are confident and aim for even greater success.

Fares expressed, “We aren’t experiencing the same sense of, ‘Uh oh, how will we surpass or outshine [Split Fiction]?’ Instead, we simply feel… just stay tuned to discover what we have in store next. I acknowledge it might sound arrogant, but that’s the level of certainty we hold regarding our work.

In the very same conversation, Fares disclosed that Hazelight doesn’t present their game ideas to Electronic Arts (EA). To clarify, EA has been the publisher for all of Hazelight’s previous games. Instead, they inform EA about their ongoing projects. As Fares put it, “That’s it. They have no role in deciding what we’re working on next.

Moreover, Fares concedes that Electronic Arts (EA) could potentially struggle with some of its collaborations with other businesses; however, he assures that this isn’t the case with Hazelight Studios. He emphasizes that they are held in high regard by EA, and their work is appreciated. Fares made it crystal clear to them that they should not intrude on what Hazelight does independently.

Based on Hazelight Studio’s past development timelines, their upcoming project likely won’t be released until at least 2028 or 2029, considering their games typically take around 3-4 years to develop. With A Way Out starting development in 2014, It Takes Two being released in 2021, and Split Fiction coming out this year, it’s plausible that the next game could be designed for the PS6 and the next generation of Xbox consoles.

If you haven’t tried Split Fiction yet, I strongly recommend giving it a go because, as our review states, it showcases Hazelight as one of the top modern studios excelling in co-op games. However, please note that Split Fiction is exclusively designed for cooperative play and cannot be enjoyed solo or with AI bots. If you have a friend with a capable PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S, you can share the game using the “Friend’s Pass” system.
