The director of Split Fiction Studios, Josef Fares, hinted at the potential development of a solo player game in the coming days, contrary to their usual focus on split-screen cooperative games. Although it might not be imminent, this news provides a glimmer of hope for fans eagerly waiting for a standalone title from Split Fiction Studios.
Established by Fares in 2014, Hazelight Studios has launched three cooperative games: “A Way Out”, “It Takes Two”, and more recently, “Split Fiction”. This latest release hit the shelves just this week and has been praised by critics, earning a stunning average critic rating of 90 on OpenCritic. In “Split Fiction”, players assume the roles of Mio and Zoe, two authors who are attempting to flee from a digitally created world based on their narratives. They must collaborate to conquer a sequence of obstacles together.
Currently, director Josef Fares has shared with Dexerto through Fall Damage that although Hazelight Studio primarily focuses on cooperative games, there’s a chance they might release a standalone title down the line. Fares emphasized that cooperation will always be a fundamental aspect of Hazelight Studio’s identity, but he pointed to Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons as an earlier project that was indeed a single-player game. “A single-player game from Hazelight is not out of the question,” Fares said, “but it will be done in our unique way.” Although he appreciates the single-player genre, Fares also made clear that he did not claim that single-player titles are no longer viable.
Split Fiction Director Won’t Discard the Possibility of Single-Player Games in the Studio’s Future
Single-player is not an impossibility for Hazelight, but it will be done in a Hazelight way.
It appears that a standalone game from Hazelight Studio might appeal to some, but given the success of their latest release “Split Fiction,” which garnered a score of 90 or higher on Metacritic for the first time in 13 years since “Mass Effect 3” in 2012, it seems more likely that they will continue to build upon their proven strengths rather than exploring new avenues like single-player games.
Previously, Fares mentioned during an interview that Hazelight Studio categorically avoids including microtransactions in their games. Microtransactions have become a hot topic of debate within modern gaming, so players may find comfort knowing that this studio has no intention of incorporating such transactions into future projects. Additionally, the director spoke about the current wave of acquisitions in the gaming industry, disclosing that there were external parties interested in acquiring Hazelight. Yet, he expressed no desire to sell the company or take it public.
