Splitgate 1 Isn’t Going Away, But There’s a Catch

While the official dedicated servers will be shutting down on August 29, the good news is that the online features will carry on, thanks to peer-to-peer (P2P) hosting. This means players can still immerse themselves in the multiplayer experience.

Developed by the talented folks at 1047 Games, Splitgate is a captivating free-to-play sci-fi shooter that was initially released on Steam in May 2019, with a console release and cross-platform matchmaking happening in June 2021. Over the years, it’s garnered incredible critical acclaim, even though it faced commercial challenges.

1047 Games launched the open beta of Splitgate 2 in May 2025, which was soon followed by a full release on June 6th. However, despite an initial buzz, the response was mediocre at best. Players reported monetization problems and a lack of finish as primary concerns. In July 2025, Splitgate 2 was withdrawn from the market by 1047 Games, who acknowledged that the release date was premature and the game needed significant improvements. The company also disclosed their intention to return to open beta. Moreover, they announced that they would cease online support for the original Splitgate in August, focusing all efforts on its sequel. This decision caused disappointment among longtime fans of the original game.

Splitgate to Get P2P Hosting Following Server Shutdown

1047 Games announced on Twitter that the official dedicated servers for Splitgate will be turned off on August 29th. However, the good news is that the game’s multiplayer mode will still be playable via peer-to-peer (P2P) web hosting, which means players can host their own online matches instead of relying on official dedicated servers like in games such as Bloodborne, GTA Online, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and many others.

The developers took into account the influence of the Stop Killing Games movement on their decision and how discussions about a retirement plan for live-service games led them to guarantee that Splitgate players wouldn’t lose access to their beloved game online. As a parting gift, 1047 Games declared they would be making all previously undisclosed, saved, or work-in-progress content available for Splitgate and providing free in-game cosmetics to everyone.

The response from the community regarding this decision was predominantly favorable, with fans acknowledging that locally-managed servers were an innovative and effective way to address a complex issue.
