Splitgate 2: New Details on Anti-Cheat, Esports, and Updates

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that Splitgate 2 is shaping up to be a game worth keeping an eye on. The integration of an in-house anti-cheat system is a game changer for any FPS title and shows the commitment 1047 Games has towards providing a fair and enjoyable experience for players.

Today, I had a chat with Ian Proulx, co-founder and CEO of 1047 Games, creators of Splitgate 2 – an exciting and action-packed shooter game. Curious to learn more about its development and competitive prospects, we delved into these topics.

First and Foremost

During our chat with Ian Proulx, we gained valuable information about the current refinements on Splitgate 2. After a recent playtest, adjustments are being made to it now. One of the initial and crucial points we asked was regarding the incorporation of a robust anti-cheat system, a vital element for any first-person shooter game in today’s era.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve prioritized our efforts – we took over a company specializing in anti-cheat technology called EQU8. We chose to integrate this team within our organization, primarily to strengthen our anti-cheat capabilities. Essentially, you have two choices: create an anti-cheat system that offers moderate protection across various games, or develop one that provides exceptional protection for a single game. For us, we’re only focused on ensuring the best possible experience in that one game.

Originally, as an external entity, their primary concern was to create solutions suitable for numerous clients. However, now that they’ve transitioned in-house, they are solely tasked with developing for Splitgate 2.

By developing our own anti-cheat system, we’ll be less dependent on third-party solutions such as BattleEye and Easy Anti-Cheat that are often cracked frequently.

Getting Competitive

If you’ve watched the gameplay of Splitgate 2, you might have realized how well-suited it appears for esports competition. It is set in an arena, similar to a sports event, and features a system that encourages players to take on roles and compete as teams.

However, talking to Ian Proulx about this, that isn’t too high on the team’s agenda:

Our art style and our lore is that this is a sport and not a war. We’re not trying to say ‘this is esports’, we’re trying to say ‘this is the world of Splitgate 2’, it’s the sport of the future. If you look at the branding, it’s very inspired by Formula 1, NBA, NFL, and so on.

For the realm of competitive gaming, our latest creation is designed to be straightforward for beginners but challenging for experts, and I believe we’ve nailed that balance more effectively than ever before. Would I consider this game a promising candidate for esports? Definitely. However, I haven’t engaged in extensive discussions about its potential as an esport yet.

In simpler terms, Proulx acknowledged that if a game is engaging and fun for people, then it’s likely that eSports will grow as a result.

Building Something Memorable

In his discussion with Ian Proulx, he consistently emphasized that this game is being created with a focus on the community. He referred to it as ‘community-led development’, discussing the importance of building connections with streamers and initiating promotions to create excitement, but ultimately, everything revolves around nurturing that community.

Discussing the latest modifications to the game, Proulx explained updates on portal functionality and balance, improvements in user interface like button mapping, and significant changes including the strategic choice to eliminate EMP grenades from the game.

The pace of development has been increased significantly, and Proulx takes great pride in the intricate sliding mechanism within the game, a feature that was meticulously crafted over several months.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but feel optimistic about the future of Splitgate 2. Just like its predecessor, it looks set to make a big splash, but this time, it seems to have even more substance to ensure its longevity beyond launch. It’s a free-to-play shooter with cosmetic microtransactions, and every aspect of it appears to be designed with the player in mind, fueled by genuine passion from the developers.
