As a die-hard fan of Splitgate, who’s spent countless hours mastering the original and eagerly awaited its sequel, I must say, my heart skipped a beat when Ian Proulx, 1047 Games’ CEO, mentioned their ‘Community First’ approach at Gamescom. It was like hearing a familiar melody in an unfamiliar tune.
Last week, I had the opportunity to sit down at Gamescom with Ian Proulx, Co-founder and CEO of 1047 Games, to talk all things Splitgate 2. We’ve compiled some of that interview here, in which Proulx discussed Esports, Anti-cheat, and other updates.
Now that I’m back from my daily half-marathon walks during Gamescom, I’ve replayed our conversation once more.
1047 Games is putting a lot of effort into ensuring that Splitgate 2 turns out fantastic (as they rightfully should), with the assurance coming across clearly in our interview that this will be achieved primarily through input from the community. Repeatedly, Proulx emphasized a ‘Community First’ strategy, which was both heartening and reassuring to hear. As an ardent fan of the original Splitgate, I had been slightly concerned about the game’s future direction after its announcement, but this emphasis on community feedback has alleviated my concerns.
Luckily, I managed to give the game a spin a few weeks back. While my earlier apprehensions have proven unfounded, I’m eager to address the pressing questions that have been on the minds of many gamers since the game was first announced.
In Splitgate 2, a key difference compared to its previous version is the inclusion of Factions. After testing the game, I observed that the faction system functions effectively, but I’m curious about Splitgate 2’s live service model, specifically if and when more factions may be added in the future. It’s common for live-service games to accumulate an excessive number of characters, heroes, or factions over time, as seen in Apex Legends which went from eight at launch to 25. Sometimes, these additions seem more focused on monetization rather than enhancing gameplay and overall quality. Regarding this matter and the potential introduction of additional factions, Proulx mentioned…
It seems to me that we might not be keen on involving ten factions, you understand? One issue we’ve been contemplating is finding a solution to avoid the problem of bloat. You get it, right? This issue arises in many games over time, making them unmanageable and unsustainable. I believe this is one reason we’re leaning towards classes instead of heroes. Could we potentially introduce more classes? Absolutely. But could we also choose not to? Definitely.
To be honest, we’re unsure of the path we’ll choose for now. It seems that the best approach is to release the game first and observe what the community prefers – whether they want a new faction or perhaps just new weapons, without needing additional abilities or equipment.
In summary, if the community of Splitgate 2 desires additional Factions, that can be arranged. I attempted to inquire further from Proulx about potential future Factions and their unique abilities, but as of now, he mentioned that the team is solely concentrating on the core game for its initial release.
