Square Enix is currently laying off employees, and these cuts could impact over 100 people in the US and UK. The company, known for popular game series like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy, has expanded internationally in recent years, but now seems to be scaling back some of its operations.
As a big Square Enix fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news on games like Kingdom Hearts 4 and the conclusion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, but things have been pretty quiet on that front. It felt like they were doing well with new projects like Octopath Traveler 0 and the Dragon Quest VII remake, so it’s really disappointing to hear they’ve had to lay off a lot of their staff, especially those outside of Japan. It’s definitely a worrying sign for the future.
Square Enix’s Mass Layoffs Hit the US and UK Offices
- Square Enix aims to consolidate its publishing.
- The company also wants its development to be done in Japan.
- Square Enix wants 70% of QA work to be done by generative AI in the future.
News of the recent layoffs has spread on social media, but a company memo reveals more about Square Enix’s plans for the future. The memo focuses on restructuring international branches and confirms a significant push to integrate artificial intelligence. By the end of 2027, the company aims for AI to handle 70% of debugging and related tasks. This move is intended to make quality assurance more efficient and give Square Enix an edge in game development.
The exact number of US employees impacted is unknown, but around 137 workers in the UK may lose their jobs. This figure isn’t final, as UK law requires the company to consult with employees first. From now on, game development will primarily happen in Japan. An internal memo explained that the company decided to close its development studios outside of Japan and centralize everything there. The memo also included information about Square Enix’s game releases over the next three years and plans to expand popular franchises—like the new Life is Strange TV show—into other forms of entertainment.
Over time, we’ll have a better understanding of how many people have been affected by layoffs. Unfortunately, job cuts have been frequent in the gaming industry this year. Microsoft experienced significant layoffs earlier in the year, and now Square Enix is also making cuts.
