As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing about the lackluster sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. I’ve been a die-hard fan since the original game graced our consoles back in the ’90s, and this latest installment was eagerly anticipated by millions like me.
Square Enix recently disclosed their financial report for the latest quarter, yet they kept secret the total sales for “Final Fantasy 7 Remake”. Fans were anticipating this update to learn the current sales numbers for “Final Fantasy 7 Remake”, but unfortunately, it did not provide that information.
As a dedicated gamer, I was thrilled when Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth dropped on Leap Day, February 29, 2024. The game was met with rave reviews and sky-high ratings from both critics and fellow fans, surpassing even its predecessor, the Remake of Final Fantasy 7. However, it seems that Takashi Kiryu, the head honcho at Square Enix, revealed a disappointing truth: despite this acclaim, Rebirth didn’t sell as well as anticipated, falling short alongside games like Final Fantasy 16 and the online game Foamstars.
The exact level of disappointment with the sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remains uncertain, as Square Enix has chosen not to disclose the number of copies shipped. Despite a 18.4% decrease in sales compared to the same period last year due to several releases in the previous quarter, there was a significant increase of 259% in operating profit. In contrast, during the same quarter of 2023, Square Enix launched Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster for PlayStation 4, along with other smaller titles. Notably, Final Fantasy 16 managed to sell three million units in its first week, and the publisher quickly revealed these sales figures.
Experts Suggest Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Sales Are Low Due To Exclusivity
Despite the sales figures for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth remaining undisclosed, it’s speculated that they are fewer than those for Final Fantasy 16. Experts and enthusiasts attribute the lower sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth to its temporary exclusivity on PlayStation 5. In response, Square Enix has announced a revised business strategy aimed at overhauling their entire development process. The CEO has stated that future releases will aim for a multiplatform approach, meaning none will be exclusive to one platform.
Furthermore, Square Enix’s recently outlined business approach focuses on major, high-quality games using their well-known intellectual properties. They aim to release fewer games annually, instead channeling all development resources internally. However, several months after unveiling this new strategy, the CEO amended his remarks, confirming that Square Enix will continue to produce indie games in conjunction with triple-A titles.
In 2024, Square Enix has a busy lineup of game releases. “Visions of Mana” is slated for August 29, followed by “Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven” in October. The remainder of the year will bring us “Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake”, “Life is Strange: Double Exposure”, and “Fantasian Neo Dimension”.
